Community Description:

The Council for a Parliament of the World’s Religions is a non-profit, interreligious organization that hosted the 1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions event. Over 7,000 persons from around the world, representing 125 religious and spiritual traditions, gathered in Chicago to consider the role of religion and spirituality in the world as we enter the 21st century. CPWR is continuing in the spirit of the 1993 Parliament event by fostering greater interreligious dialogue and cooperation through metropolitan and international initiatives.

Today the whole world lives in metropolitan Chicago, spanning a wide spectrum of ethnic racial, cultural, religious and spiritual diversity. The Metropolitan Chicago Interreligious Initiative (MCII ) is an ongoing effort to foster greater interreligious dialogue and cooperation in metropolitan Chicago.

The MCII has completed an extensive three-year exploration and organizing process utilizing interreligious encounters and forums, pilot projects, and interview with 400 key religious and spiritual leaders. The framework for engagement and network of contacts that has emerged from this process now serves as the basis for the creation of a local infrastructure for fostering dialogue and action, understanding and cooperation, among the diverse religious and spiritual communities found in the metropolitan Chicago area.

Position Description:

A McCormick student could participate in a wide variety of opportunities, including but not limited to: assisting in the coordination of interreligious encounters and forums; overseeing an ongoing MCII project, such as religion and the media, hospital chaplaincy, community exchanges, etc.; assisting in the development of a new MCII project with local religious and spiritual communities; interviewing key religious and spiritual leaders from a variety of traditions and communities; and raising public awareness about religious and spiritual diversity in metropolitan Chicago.

Supervisor:

Reverend Dirk Ficca, MCII Director
