Covenant UCC is a mission-minded church that does ministry through ministries created and developed by its members. The members through these ministries, function through the interrelatedness of membership, discipleship, and stewardship, all combined to create a dynamic of ministry to the person, the family, and the community. The entire book of Acts sets the tone and context of ministry at Covenant Church. It is in this body of scripture where dependent followers were confronted with the challenge of becoming dependent disciples relying no longer on the physical presence of Jesus Christ but on the power of the Holy Spirit.
Our motto, Empowered by Christ and Embracing our Culture, seeks to nuance our as not only exclusive but inclusive of all people. Situated in the sanctuary are three flags, American, United Church of Christ and Garvey, visual statements of the paradoxical and diverse nature of our sitz-em-leben, where in spite of claims of liberty, many are loose, but not free. It is the Holy Spirit which empowers and frees us to embrace the tensions of diversity and paradox that all captives might be set free.
Covenant UCC is a predominately African-American new-church start with approximately 435 members. It is 18 months in operation and recently supported by the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ, United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, UCC, Chicago Metropolitan Association, and the Community Renewal.
