EPC's mission/purpose is welcome all God's children, nurture and equip them to be engaged disciples of Jesus Christ and incarnate God's love and justice by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are an urban church in a very diverse neighborhood. Edgewater is an immigrant community; a gentrified community; a community with a significant gay population; our immediate part of the neighborhood includes many people with low incomes, and people living with chronic mental illness.
We currently have 120 members with an average attendance of about 95. Many who attend are not members and we do not emphasize membership as much as engaging with the mission and ministry of and beyond the church. Because of our diverse membership (see below), we work to design worship in ways that reflect the variety of cultures. We have only a few older adults and a substantial number of children and youth, with a growing number of young adults (19-35). Our primary local mission is Care for Real, the Edgewater food and clothing ministry that serves over 4,000 people a month. Our building is home to a variety of non profits including Interfaith Worker Justice, Arise Chicago, Even Start Literacy Program, Hull House Head Start, City Lit Theater and others. On our best days we are partners in mission. At other times we have a landlord/tenant relationship.
The majority of members originally come from Africa--primarily Nigeria, Cameroon and Kenya. Some have lived here 30 years; others are recent arrivals. We also have members from India, Korea, Nepal, Philippines, Austria, Scotland, and Iran, as well as African Americans and Euro-Americans.
About a third of the members live in Edgewater. Most others live in the surrounding neighborhoods. A few come from the west side or south side.
Our interns typically have responsibilities in worship every Sunday; preach at least four times a year; lead Bible studies; assist with our weekly Lighthouse Program with the chronically mentally ill; and have opportunities to be involved with children's Sunday School, youth, confirmation, individual membership care, administration and other areas of church and community life as they desire.
