Community
First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights is a 2000-member church located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The church was established in 1855 and celebrates a rich history. The congregation is vital, caring and actively involved in a wide variety of programs for persons of all ages. The 3-fold theme "Worship-Study-Serve" identifies the church's priorities of worship, education and mission.

The congregation is 95% Caucasian, well educated, with a wide range of theological perspectives. The church building is centrally located in downtown Arlington Heights near the business district and public library and houses a PADS Shelter each Tuesday evening.

Position Description:

This is a "generalist" parish ministry position, which offers opportunity for experience in a wide range of ministry areas. Students will be able to design a job description which will permit them to focus on a particular area of interest, but also take part in a full range of parish activities. There are ample opportunities for worship leadership, preaching, adult education, youth and children's ministry, pastoral care, mission, community relations and administration. One of the unique opportunities is being able to experience the dynamics of working with a large multiple staff.

Supervisor:

The primary supervisor will be Dr. Dianne Shields, Associate Pastor for Education. (M.Div., McCormick, 1990; Ph.D. Northwestern University). Dr. Shields has experience supervising student teachers and worked as a representative in the Field Education Office while she was a student at McCormick. She is currently a member of the Alumni Board and Adjunct Faculty. Other staff of the church are available for supervision and consultation in particular areas of interest, e.g. mission, pastoral care and counseling, evangelism, administration, etc.

Directions:

The church is located approximately 10 miles northwest of O'Hare airport, via I-90 and Arlington Heights Road. It is also easily accessible by train, located 1 block north of the Metra Northwest Line Arlington Heights station.
