Community Description:

Established
1865

Lawrence Hall is a 135-year-old youth service agency serving (800 youth) abused and neglected children. It is the second largest youth service agency in the state , and services youth in 5 service areas (residential care, independent living arrangements, foster care, headstart and therapeutic day school). As an Episcopal charities agency, we have an active chaplaincy program, serving the spiritual needs of clients and staff.

Our main office is at Lawrence & California (Francisco), but residential units are in Rogers Park, South Shore and the main campus. The bulk of our residents are court referred wards of the state, and we work closely with The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). Racial/ethnic composition: 85% African-American, 8% Anglo, and 7% Latino. (These percentages reflect the general proportion of kids in the DCFS system.)

Position Description:

The most opportunity is in learning to develop relationship ministry with both staff and clients, as well as understanding how on institutional chaplaincy works. There are worship and preaching opportunities in the course of a CPE term. Bible studies on the units are central to the program. Utilizing community resources is another major component of learning. (A completed DCFS certification is required and can be done at Lawrence Hall.)

Supervisor:

David Stanford is an ordained Episcopal priest (20 years), and is a board-certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains. He has been a site supervisor with the ACTS Urban CPE program, and an adjunct professor at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary as a seminarian supervisor.
