Community Description:

Established 1865 Mission/Purpose: Recognizing that the Church is the organization for carrying on that work among all people which Jesus Christ inaugurated, the purpose of this Church shall be to help individuals live as Christians, to maintain a Christian Congregation upon a community basis and to promote the Kingdom of God; specifically: • To provide for the public worship of God in spirit and in truth • To teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the perfect way of life • To help individuals exemplify Christ in their lives through pure and righteous living and constant manifestation of friendliness to all people • To express the Christian spirit through the support of worthy benevolence, both at home and abroad • To enlist the interest and support of the youth of the congregation through provision of a broad and vital program of Christian education and fellowship • To work toward the moral and spiritual upbuilding of the entire community Church Statistics/Programs: St. Paul has 700 members with approximate an approximate church attendance weekly of 250. Activities beside Sunday worship include: • 45-50 in Chapel/Sunday School (weekly) • 10-20 in Confirmation Class (weekly) • 20-30 in Youth Choirs (weekly practice) • 15-20 at Pizza with the Pastor (bi-weekly) • 20-35 at Junior High Activities (monthly) • 10-12 in Vacation Bible School • 100 at annual family Advent Workshop • 20-25 at annual Birthday Party for Jesus (Christmas Eve Day) • 30-35 in Christmas Pageant (children) • 25-40 in the annual high school Work Camp (North Carolina in August 2000); Plus Halloween "Fright Fest" trip to Great America (amusement park), Brookfield Zoo, etc. • 10 in Bible Study (weekly) • 20 in "Salties" (monthly religious book study) • 40 in Senior Choir (practice weekly) • 20+ in Bell Choir (practice weekly) Village Employment Income Sources: Illinois Central Railroad and Homewood-Flossmoor High School, which is an outstanding National Blue Ribbon Award-winning School with renowned music and theater departments. The village of Homewood also has a wide spectrum of park district/recreational opportunities and is a caring, friendly community just a commuter train ride from downtown Chicago. Village Business consists of a thriving downtown area, recently is redeveloped with traditional brick sidewalks, gas-lantern style street lights, three new fine dining type restaurants in historic Downtown district, major new retail outlets including: Home Depot, Office Max, Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, etc. About the Community: People who grew up here moving back. Large, lifelong resident population, growing minority population, small town "feel" and pride; an island of Sanity in the urban "sprawl." Position Description:

Supervisor:

The Interim Pastor of St. Paul Community Church is Rev. Gordon H. Reif. He is 69 years of age and a retired Presbyterian Minister ordained to the Gospel Ministry on May 10, 1956. Rev. Reif graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a B.S. in Education, Double Major in English and Sociology in 1952; McCormick Theological Seminary, Masters in Theology, 1956.
