Community Description:

A. Specific Congregation/Agency Information

UCM is a 73 year old, ecumenical campus ministry located on the campus of Northwestern University, a major research university with 17,000 students (7,000 undergraduates). UCM is sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Methodist Church. The mission of our ministry is “to train thoughtful Christian leaders for the church and our complex world.” Through programs of worship, Bible study/discussion groups, speakers, retreats, fellowship activities and an international friendship mission trip, UCM strives to meet the spiritual needs of students on campus.

B. General geographic, population, and racial make-up

Our program draws over 100 participants during the school year. Sunday night dinner and worship is the core of our weekly program and draws approximately 25 students (mostly undergraduates and a few young graduate students). Many students come from mainline Protestant backgrounds, however UCM draws students from many Christian denominations (and some of other world religions) with its open, welcoming environment. UCM’s racial make-up reflects the make up of the university, which is primarily Caucasian with a few Asian, Latino, and African-American students.

Position Description:

The seminary intern will become a full partner in ministry with college students. UCM offers opportunities for weekly worship leadership, regular preaching, weekly Bible study facilitation, kitchen work, pastoral care, publicity, administration of a non-profit organization and fundraising. UCM seeks to match the interests of the student with the ministry needs of the campus ministry. The unique gifts of each seminary intern offer much to our small, close-knit community.

The seminary intern will participate fully in the community that develops at UCM during the year. Participation in Sunday night dinner and worship, Bible study and staff meeting are necessary. Additional activities include attendance at 2 retreats per year, occasional guest speakers, fellowship events and an international friendship mission trip. In addition to regular weekly programs, the seminary intern is free to cultivate programs that match their gifts and talents with the interest of the students.

Rev. Julie Windsor Mitchell is the Executive Director and Campus Minister at UCM. She has been a Field Education supervisor since she became Campus Minister in 1999. Prior to her ministry at UCM, she was the Pastor at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Evanston. She graduated from Brown University and Harvard Divinity School.  She has dual standing in the Presbyterian Church (USA), United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ. She takes seriously the responsibility for mentoring seminary students and loves encouraging students to develop their practical skills for the practice of ministry.

Although Evanston is accessible to Hyde Park by public transportation, this site requires a car for placement (45 minute commute each way). McCormick students must commit to being on campus at least three times per week, generally for approximately 3-4 hours at a time.

To reach Northwestern University: Take Lake Shore Drive north to Sheridan Road. Follow Sheridan Road into Evanston. 3 miles north of the border of Evanston, just before you reach the main University Chapel on Sheridan Road, turn left at Clark Street. (If you reach the chapel and the sharp bend in the road you have gone too far.) Go two blocks to Chicago Ave. and turn right on Chicago Ave. UCM is the gray house on the left side of the street.

To reach parking lot:

Turn left on Clark. Proceed past Chicago Ave. to Sherman Ave. Turn right on Sherman at the light. Take the first right on University Place. Proceed almost until you reach the dead end. Look for the ATM machine and alley on the right side of the street. Turn right into the alley and on the left side you will see our parking lot in the back yard of our gray house.
