Community Description:

Established 1894 We are a multi-racial, Open and Affirming Congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. We are a Sister/Brother congregation with Koinonia Church in Laoag City, the Philippines. We are a Sanctuary Congregation and the family that was in the sanctuary with us continues to be a part of our community. We are people of all ages and our building is accessible and we are working at making it barrier free. In 1979, a group of our members crossed the Midway to refurbish a building and establish an intentional living community called the Covenantal Community. It is now a multi-racial community of 21 apartments. Worship is at the center of our life together. We are a congregation with a rich heritage of creative worship. Our liturgical Dance Choir and several members who are interested in drama have enriched our lives. During the celebration of 100th anniversary, we developed and adopted a strategic plan to guide our ministry into the next century. Our Christian Development program includes classes for children and adults. We have an active youth ministry. We continually seek ways to reach out and involve new people. As those committed to ministering in the name of Jesus Christ in our world, we try to understand the gospel imperatives for our time and live them out. Building on the work of the Covenantal Community, we recently established the Woodlawn Development Associates to develop low and moderate income housing; to shape the neighborhood into a community; to establish a small school; to make the neighborhood safe from gangs and to plant urban gardens.

Position Description:

We expect students to participate in the life of the church, preach, lead worship and attend staff and Board meetings. We would like to build on the good work that has been done in youth ministry. There are opportunities to develop worship and educational experiences.

Supervisor:

Eugene H. Winkler, Interim Senior Pastor
