Community Description:

Founded 103 years ago, we are proud to be the oldest African-American UCC congregation in Chicago. We currently have 100 members. We host an exciting, spirited Sunday worship service (11:15am-12:30pm), along with an enthusiastic Tuesday Evening Book Club from 7-8:30pm (our version of a fun Bible Study). Every summer, we host “God at the Movies,” on Tuesday evenings in which we watch a new, popular movie and explore the theological implications/underpinnings of the scenes, cast and plot. Aside from worship services and events, our largest focus is promoting social justice and community outreach. Therefore, we value our Girls and Boys Outreach Mentoring Programs. We are currently implementing a Free Food Program via the Chicago Food Depository and G.E.D. tutoring program. In line with the tenants of our UCC faith tradition, we value meeting the needs of the “differently-abled” community. We recently hired a sign language interpreter and began a Hearing Impaired Ministry. Our church is accessible for the walking impaired via a chair lift. We love ALL people regardless of race, gender, economic status or sexual orientation and we love connecting with other people who love ALL people!

We currently are a predominately African American and middle-class church. Most of our members hold masters-level degrees. Most of our members are biologically related. Our church is very family oriented. Most of our members are professional-working business people serving in the areas of education, government administration, law, and civil service. Most of our members reside in Kenwood, Hyde Park, and the South Suburbs.
