Woods Church is a large, vibrant community of believers in Jesus Christ. With more than 1500 members, our congregation incorporates a diversity of gifts, skills, experiences, and Christian maturity that allow us to address the constantly changing needs of our community in exciting ways. Woods’ location near Baltimore and DC means that the congregation includes many highly educated professionals who serve as both resources for and consumers of high quality adult education ministry. The dedication, gifts, and skills of our members allow us to participate in a variety of outreach projects that often involve construction, legal services, artistic endeavors, food preparation and serving, and prayer ministries. We seek an associate pastor who is energetic in faith with a passionate commitment to Christian education, both for self and others. First and foremost, the candidate needs a strong sense of call to the ministry in a large church and a dedication to cultivating spiritual growth through Christian education, leadership and personal example.
The candidate must have a thorough knowledge of and commitment to scripture and Reformed theology. Spiritual maturity with a strong personal depth, integrity, and grounding are required to articulate a clear and consistent theology.
As a teacher, preacher, and leader, the candidate must exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning and a love of reading and study, while also being able to inspire and challenge the congregation with a sermon. She or he needs to be able to collaborate with others to formulate a vision for Christian education; communicate, recruit, and inspire others to that vision; and implement strategies that realize that vision.
Knowing how to be agile within an organizational structure is essential. The candidate must be highly motivated and able to motivate others. The ability to build a strong personal support system to cope with demands that sometimes seem boundless will be important to success, as will a strong degree of self-differentiation and emotional maturity. A good sense of humor and an engaging personality will help the candidate to fit in as respected colleague on the Woods pastoral team.
