Location Chicago, IL
Start Date 8.7.2012
Type Full Time

Job Description:

The purpose of this role is to reinvigorate the youth program at LaSalle Street Church (LSC) by encouraging and enabling young people to develop a strong and lasting relationship with God.

We believe the best way to foster an environment to share Christ with students, is to create authentic opportunities of engagement that are inviting, fun, adventurous and relational.

With attendees coming from roughly 66 different zip codes in the Chicago area, LSC must be intentionally innovative in its approach to youth ministry. It is difficult for students in the youth program to attend activities during the week. Therefore, Sunday is the main time to be with the Jr. and Sr. High students; however, the Director of Youth Ministry must be creative and flexible in planning times to engage students outside of Sunday morning.

The goal of youth ministry at LSC is to help students encounter God through transformative experiences that will lead to a lifelong journey with Christ. This goal will be achieved, not only by working directly with the youth, but also through assisting parents or guardians with the discipleship of their children.

Expectations:

It is expected that the Director of Youth Ministry will be a regular worshipper of LaSalle Street Church, a personal practitioner of spiritual formation and a constant investor in the lives of our youth both inside and outside the walls of LSC. We expect this person to be very enthusiastic, have a healthy heart towards our students and be a timely and effective communicator with staff, parents and congregants.

Duties:

Provide oversight of programs for junior and senior high youth

Develop and manage a team of volunteers and provide formal and informal leadership training

Develop and grow a youth group that attracts children from both the church and the local community

Build authentic relationships with the youth and be able to understand and help them deal with the pressures they face

Develop strong lines of communication with parents and/or guardians

Involve the youth in church ministry and outreach to develop stronger ties with the adult congregation

Remain current and relevant to secular and Christian culture and, as LSC is a non-denominational church, be able to handle progressive and conservative viewpoints

Meet regularly with the Executive Pastor

Attend weekly staff meetings

Evaluate and make recommendations concerning teaching materials and methods

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

A preferred candidate would have a Bachelors degree. While a graduate degree in theology would be favored, it is not required. 2-3 years experience working with youth and previous management experience is crucial as experiential knowledge of managing people, dealing with interpersonal conflict and collaboration is essential. Prior experience working in an urban environment is important.

Leadership Skills: The ideal candidate will be a strong team leader who is highly organized, collaborative and a fearless delegator that is communicative and a collective and independent thinker.

Active Listener/ Humble Learner: The Director of Youth Ministry should not only be a strong leader but also an energetic listener and life-long learner.

Administrative skills: The Director of Youth Ministry must possess strong organization and administration abilities and cope well with changing needs in the daily and weekly schedule.

Accountabilities: The Director of Youth Ministry will report directly to the Executive Pastor and is also subject to the leadership and direction of the Senior Pastor. This position is created to be a synergistic support to the overall ministry provided at LaSalle Street Church.
