First Presbyterian Church is located in Iola, Kansas which is the county seat of Allen county, about 90 miles south of Kansas City. Our town has been in the midst of a resurgence with new hospitals, businesses, renovated fine arts facilities, a community college and expanded hiking and biking trails. Iola Presbyterian is over 150 years old and has a long tradition of commitment in service to God and community. We are looking for a new pastor who is seeking a welcoming home in which to begin their career.

We hope to call a pastor that will provide the guidance and energy to help us continue our current activities in education, community outreach, mission, as well as our overall commitment to faith and each other. In addition, we need help expanding our offerings in all of these areas. We need a leader who will help us attract new members and encourage current members by engaging people in both our current strengths as a church and the opportunities that we envision for the future. Finally, we are looking for a person with the spiritual grounding to meet the needs of our church family. While spiritual maturity often comes from pastoral experience, we are open to a recent seminary graduate with the appropriate blend of attitude, character and life experience.

We are committed to providing scripture-based ministry and programs to both our current members and to the community. Our church is a place to find a friend and to be a friend. At church, we can look back on the events of the past week and contemplate what the next one holds for us; we can pray and reflect on the truly important things in our life. Church involvement completes us, renews us and empowers us to share the good news of Christ’s love with others.

We also see the church as a social agent in the community. We believe in reaching out to build fellowship with local churches while serving the needs of the community at large. We currently operate a soup kitchen twice a month in partnership with Humanity House, staffed by community volunteers that feeds an average of 80-90 meals per Sunday. We participate yearly with the Iola Area Ministerial Association, including joint community worship services for MLK, Lent, and Thanksgiving. We are part of the Community Lenten Breakfast series, a multi-church Vacation Bible School, and also provide scholarships to community youth to attend church camps.

As Christians, it is our duty to put principles into practice not just spiritually but as engaged citizens of the community. Our members hold leadership positions or are involved in many organizations within the community.
