In Memoriam: Mary McFarland


Mary Catherine McFarland, 88, of Chesterfield County, VA, passed away on January 24, 2016, after a long illness.

Mary was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio. She attended and graduated from Park College in Parkville, MO, where she participated in basketball and other sports. She graduated in 1951 with a master's degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. As a young adult, Mary worked as Religious Education Director for a parish in Detroit. Prior to teaching, Mary worked many years as a social worker with migrant farm workers for Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers of America.

While living and teaching in California, she was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Visalia. Retiring after 23 years from the Goshen Elementary School in Visalia, CA, Mary moved to the Richmond area in 1989 to be close to her sister, Mildred.

She was an active member of Crestwood Presbyterian Church. At the time of her passing, she resided at Dunlop House Assisted Living in Colonial Heights, VA, and received wonderful and loving care from the members of the staff.

Mary was very generous with her time and resources, contributing her efforts toward many charitable causes and organizations, including her church, a local food bank, Church World Service, Heifer International, and United Farm Workers of America.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Milton McFarland and Martha Lough McFarland; her sister, Mildred Ann Walton (Glenn) of Midlothian, VA; and her sister, Sarah M. McGriff (Mac) of South Charleston, WV. She is survived by her brother, Robert Lough McFarland (Elizabeth Ann) of Vonore, TN; and anumber of nieces, nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews.
