Grayson asks me “Why did I choose McCormick in the first place?”  That is a loaded question!  There is so much background to get to the answer to that question but I tell many people, “I did not choose McCormick, I believe that God chose McCormick for me.”  And I add to that…, “Now that I have been to and through McCormick I am a part of it for life.  You can’t get rid of me!”

The Alumni/ae Council, on behalf of the Alumni/ae Association, carefully studies all the information received.

Its selection is recommended to the Board of Trustees, which has the final approval of the candidate. In May of 2002, the Council voted that one alumnus/a be honored annually. Please be advised that the Council can only review the materials sent to them. They will make a decision based on those materials alone. Therefore, a careful, thoughtful and complete nomination is most helpful in the selection process.

In 1976, the McCormick Board of Trustees established the Distinguished Alumnus/a Award:

This award is recognition of distinguished contribution to the ministry of the church by an alumnus/a of McCormick Seminary. The award is open to all, without reference to age, sex, ethnic background, denomination, form of ministry, length of service or public fame. Rather, the emphasis will be on quality and significance of exceptional contribution to the ministry of Jesus Christ.

When you live in New Jersey, within walking distance of another Presbyterian seminary, and know that one important way alums help McCormick is to encourage prospective students to check it out, figuring out how to show support for our alma mater is a bit tricky. Just for the record, I carry my McCormick tote bag when I go to the library at this other seminary, a bag with very large letters so you can’t miss it.
