This is a storytelling segment, where students will be sharing their personal stories - highlighting their ministerial work, future goals and how McCormick is helping in this journey. Here, we will also explore some of the things that students are doing to maintain a balance between school, family, work and self-care.

In this week's issue, meet Sheila Mclaurin, a senior MDiv student.

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

I was born and raised on the southside of Chicago. I am a wife and mother, grandmother and great grandmother. I am a retired postal employee of 33 years. I am also a licensed and ordained minister at the Apostolic church of God. Located at 6320 S. Dorchester. I served in the nursing home ministry, baptism ministry. It is an honor to serve those who are shut in.

I joined ACOG 1986. I became a choir member where I sang soprano for over 20 years. We traveled to Europe and many parts of the country singing to the glory of God. One of my fondest memories was when we were invited to sing at the Civic Orchestra Hall with Chicago Sinfonietta under the direction of the late Maestro Paul Freeman. The founder of the Sinfonietta (1987). This was in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. I received a Bachelor degree in Business Administration in 2006 from Trinity Christian College. Palos Heights, Illinois. I also received an Associates Degree from Olive Harvey City College in Liberal Arts.

Why Seminary?

I decided to go to seminary because I believe God chose it for me. I believe that it is always something to learn about God. God is infinite and all knowing. When we have a taste of God’s goodness we often continue to seek to know more about God. This is what happened. I cannot stop seeking the Spirit of God. I feel I am continually drawn to God. I want to have a closer and stronger relationship with the spirit. I believe I have a work to do on earth for God.

In what ways is McCormick helping you achieve your goal?

McCormick has given me great revelation on who I am with ministry. I enjoyed being able to express my own thoughts of Jesus Christ. It is a decision I have never regretted. The Professors are the best. I feel the presence of God. I know that God has been with me during this process.

What else do you spend most of your time on that is not school or work?

I enjoy traveling, where it has taken me to places such as Russia, Egypt and Hawaii. I love to roller skate, something I often do. It is such good exercise, physically and mentally. I enjoy life.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I thank God for my life. I love God’s people, and I love being able to serve. I accepted Christ many years ago, and my life has never been the same. Where God leads me. I will follow. God has plans for me to prosper. Jer 29:11
