SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
DUTIES
The following duties comprise the core of the work. Facilitate lively conversations with students and recognized student organizations about spirituality, faith development, religious diversity, community building, interfaith concerns, and social justice commitments.
· Provide pastoral care to students.
· Assist in the management of the Esch Hurvis Center for Spiritual and Religious Life.
· Engage all members of the campus community in conversations and activities related to spiritual and religious life.
· Assist the department’s partnership with Off Campus Studies to encourage and mentor developmental efforts of students returning from off-campus studies.
· Staff and lead orientation and first-year outreach, including RITU@L (a pre-orientation retreat for first-year students)
· Serve as a member of the On-Call rotation for Deans and Directors
· Serve as a member of the Student Life Division contributing to divisional projects and events.
· Develop a diverse network of partners on campus and in the community to develop collaborative outreach and service in spiritual and religious life.
· Support all programs and services of the department as appropriate.
· Supervise student employees and early career professional staff as appropriate.
· Other duties as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Will work collaboratively with a diverse body of Lawrence students, staff, faculty, and community partners. Also, will engage with the Staff team at Spiritual and Religious Life as a colleague, sharing possibilities, insights, observations, and creative energy.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
* Master’s Degree required.
* Ordination or similar credentialing in a religious tradition is preferred, but we will consider candidates who have equivalent training and experience and are ineligible for credentialing.
* Strong pastoral care skills required.
Experience in chaplaincy, student development, or a related field, as well as programmatic and administrative responsibility in higher education or within a religious community.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Aptitude for encouraging the spiritual development of emerging adults, including those who do not affirm any particular religious tradition
Ability to manage a variety of tasks and multiple programming priorities with competency and accuracy.
Knowledge of the theology and practice of world religions.
Ability to project emotional stability and a calm presence.
Emotional sensitivity amid human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and excellent judgment.
Knowledge and skill in developing collaborative relationships and sustainable programs.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
