Organizational Mission:

Our mission is to bring compassionate spiritual support to unsheltered and precariously housed people in Marin County. To provide this spiritual presence where homeless people are most often found, on the streets, at the shelters, motels, and encampments. To build community between homeless persons and non-homeless faith communities, organizations, and individuals. To speak on behalf of the unsheltered at congregations, county organizations and to local government. To conduct interfaith services including but not limited to celebrations, holidays and memorials.

General Description:

The Chaplain is hired by the TSC Board in collaboration with the Executive Director and is employed by the Marin Interfaith Council which acts as fiscal sponsor of TSC. The Chaplain works with the Executive Director to fulfill the Organizational Vision and Mission by serving as ritual leader, spiritual caregiver, and advocate for TSC participants.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a compassionate presence with and for unhoused people wherever they are throughout Marin, offering spiritual care in both one-on-one and group contexts.

  • Develops and nurtures programs, events, and projects of TSC. Programs subject to change in light of pandemic and shifting needs/circumstances:

o   Tuesday Wellness Group and Dinner: an interfaith, non-denominational gathering consisting of ritual, prayer, and conversation followed by a community meal. (to-go meals during Covid).

o   Friday Coffee: an informal conversation and check-in group at a local encampment.

o   Annual Thanksgiving Eve Service: an interfaith service led by TSC participants and partnering congregations; an opportunity to introduce the wider community to the work of TSC.

o   National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day: on or around December 21, TSC hosts a collaborative gathering to remember and honor those who have died homeless in Marin County

o   Ongoing virtual TSC Community Forums that include a Chaplain’s Report and guest speaker/s.

  • Collaborates and partners with other agencies that serve the street community and cultivates a working knowledge of those agencies for referral, cooperation, collegial support, and advocacy.

  • Collaborates and partners with other congregations to encourage awareness of homelessness in Marin County and encourage financial and prayerful support of MISC.

  • Represents TSC as a spiritual leader in the community.

Qualifications:

  • Ordained clergy or member of a religious order in a recognized spiritual tradition.

  • Master’s degree from an accredited seminary or theological institution.

  • At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (4 units preferred)

  • Interfaith sensitivity and knowledge of various spiritual traditions

  • Experience and skill working with marginalized people, victims of violence, and trauma survivors.

  • Understanding of homelessness and poverty, contributing systems and structures

  • Understanding of addictions and current treatment modalities

  • Understanding of mental health problems and current treatment modalities

Other Details:

This position reports to the Executive Director of The Street Chaplaincy and remuneration will be commensurate with experience. It is a twenty (20) hour a week salaried position. The Street Chaplaincy is fiscally sponsored by the Marin Interfaith Council MIC) and as such the candidate chosen will be employed by MIC.
