Our vision is to be a congregation that worships God joyfully, creatively, reverently; we want to be a community that excludes no one, nurturing and empowering members and newcomers alike. We endeavor to be a movement that carries Christ’s grace to the streets, courageously confronting society’s ills.
We live out our vision in our weekly Bible based, theologically sound worship services. We pray for each other and celebrate special events in each others’ lives. We appreciate themed worship services, such as preaching series, creatively observing liturgical seasons, and relaxing our order of worship in the summer. We have deep respect for the study and proclamation of scripture. We appreciate a challenging charge at the end of the service. Christian hospitality is one of our strengths. Our members strive to be genuine. We greet visitors warmly helping them feel welcome. Our Christian Education gatherings are well attended both by members and by others in the community. We are involved in a wide variety of outreach ministries, originating both from our church and our community. Our weekly worship services provide opportunities for lay participation, including choir, ushers/greeters, acolytes, and liturgists. We strive to participate in local, regional, and global missions. We have sent groups and individuals on mission trips in order to share the love of Christ. We also reach out to our own community through several regular activities.
First Presbyterian Church is located in the center of the village of Springville and most of our members are active in the community. Therefore we are aware of the ever changing needs of our neighbors. Springville is a small community of about 5000 people, but draws daily visitors from the surrounding area who come for shopping, medical care, youth activities and cultural events. Three regional schools are located within 2 miles of our church, also contributing to the busyness of the village. We address the needs of the community with Christian love and compassion. We hold a rummage sale biannually which many area residents depend on to purchase inexpensive clothing and household goods. Since 2017 we have hosted quarterly free community dinners. They are held late in the month when people who depend on government assistance may be struggling to make ends meet. We also work closely with other organizations such as the local affiliate of Love In the Name of Christ. We share our facility with community groups. For example the Springville Chorale practices and performs in our sanctuary. We host two weekly Bible studies which are open to community members. Our proximity to Buffalo allows for ministry to a diverse group of people. Since 2017 we have supported the Buffalo Peace House in a variety of ways. Their ministry provides lodging and support for asylum seekers.
An effective, theologically sound pastor will help our body of Christ grow spiritually, allowing us to better meet our goals. The pastor will inspire and encourage us; teach us, support us, and build relationships within and beyond the walls of the church, and will act as a connecting point for our outreach activities. New ideas for ministry and service will help us expand our positive influence in our local community and beyond.
To be a successful leader at First Presbyterian Church of Springville, our pastor should be an authentic, spiritually mature person whose life is centered in Christ. This person needs to be compassionate, personable, energetic and a bridge-builder with an overwhelming desire to serve the Lord who will encourage everyone to work together to fulfill our mission. Many of our members are senior citizens, so a heart for the senior population is important. It is also important that our leader have vision for church growth that will lead to more balanced intergenerational membership. An appreciation for rural ministry is needed, as is a willingness to live in and participate in our community life. Residents enjoy living in the Springville area because of an abundance of outdoor activities including cross country and downhill skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing and golfing. Springville also offers public and private education including a preschool for children with disabilities. Local theater and arts programs are offered through the Springville Center for the Arts and medical care through Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and local medical providers. We also enjoy close proximity to Buffalo and its many cultural and recreational activities including museums, professional sports teams, touring Broadway musicals, an orchestra and a beautiful waterfront area.
