Alum reflects on her ministry calling

04-03-2023

McCormick alum reflects on how her work or ministry answers the call to meet the need of their community.

I have always felt called by God to a ministry of earth care and climate justice. For a little while, I thought that calling would look like traditional ministry serving a congregation. But at this time of my life, as I near the tenth anniversary of my ordination as a PCUSA pastor, I’m more and more struck by what my vocation actually looks like. For example, recently I presented a workshop at an eco-justice conference. I wore my collar, intending to facilitate a conversation on how we must act boldly for climate justice if we’re going to be faithful Christians. Minutes before my workshop was to begin, however, my toddler needed me. She was tired and more than anything she just needed to be held and loved. So, I put her into her carrier and rocked her to sleep as I started the presentation. And there I was: faith leader, activist, mama-- all at once. Our world is aching from racism, poverty, climate change, and so many injustices. The world needs us to show up as our whole selves, faithfully loving God’s world and God’s people. And trusting in God, our whole selves are enough for the work ahead.
