Brad Braxton leads 2011 King Service at McCormick

On Friday, January 14, McCormick Theological Seminary’s Center for African American Ministries and Black Church Studies continues its tradition of honoring one of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement with its Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service of Praise and Worship. The Center selects a prominent African American preacher and scholar whose ministry and values embodies Dr. King’s witness to the Gospel, welcoming this year to the pulpit acclaimed preacher and New Testament scholar the Rev. Dr. Brad Braxton, Distinguished Visiting Scholar at McCormick for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Following a reception at 5:45 p.m. in McCormick’s Ender Lobby, attendees will gather at Augustana Chapel for a time of prayer and praise at 6:30 p.m., featuring musical guests the Imani Ya Watume Choir from Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago. Worship formally begins at 7 p.m. and, in addition to Dr. Braxton, will feature the Progressive Community Center Liturgical Dance Ministry.
Dr. Brad Braxton is an ordained Baptist minister and a respected voice among today’s progressive religious leaders. He holds a Ph.D. in New Testament studies from Emory University, a Master’s degree in theology from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a B.A. degree in religious studies from the University of Virginia where he was a Jefferson Scholar. Dr. Braxton’s previous positions include professorships at Vanderbilt University and Wake Forest University and pastorates at the Riverside Church in New York City and Douglas Memorial Community Church in Baltimore, Maryland.
