Faculty presenting at Society of Biblical Literature conference

Two McCormick faculty teaching in the Bible field will be participating in the Society of Biblical Literature’s annual meeting, hosted this year in New Orleans, November 21-24

Dr. Jae Won Lee, Assistant Professor of New Testament, will be presenting “Paul and Reconciliation in Romans: From a Korean Postcolonial Perspective” at the SBL’s Romans through History and Cultures session. Investigating socio-political and theological/ideological meanings of reconciliation in Paul’s Epistle to the Romans from a Korean postcolonial perspective, the paper asks whether the situation of first century Jews and non-Jews divided under imperial Roman rule can resonate for contemporary Koreans in a country divided by international power dynamics.

Contributing to three different panel discussions, Dr. Frank Yamada, Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible and Director for the Center of Asian American Ministries, is one of several scholars reflecting on the importance of diverse voices in the academy at a session entitled, “Nurturing the Next Generation of Scholars.” The session represents a partnership between the SBL and the Fund for Theological Education’s initiative of the same name.

Following a panel discussion of Dr. Uriah Y. Kim’s monograph, Identity and Loyalty in the David Story: A Postcolonial Reading, Dr. Yamada participates in a joint session of Feminist Hermeneutics of the Bible and African American Biblical Hermeneutics, addressing “Inclusive Biblical Interpretation: Taking the Other Seriously.” The session explores the implications for theological education and congregational practices of interpreting the Bible by incorporating these normally excluded voices.
