09-16-2009
McCormick Theological Seminary mourns the passing of Dr. Lewis S. Mudge, former Dean of the Faculty and Professor of Theology at McCormick for 11 years. Dr. Mudge died in his home in Pasadena, California, on Friday, September 11, at the age of 79.
Dr. Mudge’s roots ran deep in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as a champion for social justice, ecumenical relations, and the work of theological education in shaping leaders for the Church. He believed in the ministry of teaching and invested much of his professional life in the PCUSA’s seminaries. Having earned his Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1955, he joined McCormick’s faculty and administration in 1976. Beginning in 1987, Dr. Mudge served as Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the Faculty, and Professor of Theology at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) until his retirement in 2000. During this time he had also taught at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley.
Memorial services are scheduled for October 16 at Princeton Theological Seminary and later this fall at First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo by the SFTS campus.
