Hispanic heritage series mixes theology, pop culture

The Center for the Study of Latin@ Theology and Ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary is planning a dynamic series of events throughout Hispanic Heritage Month entitled, “Doing Theology Latinamente in Chicago: Dialogues with Popular Culture.”

The series kicks off at McCormick on Monday, September 21, with an exhibition of performance art and paintings by Sergio Gomez and discussion with theologian Cecilia Gonzalez-Andrieu. Gomez is a Chicago-based artist whose work explores human and spiritual identity. Professionally trained in several media, he is a college professor, graphic/web designer, illustrator, Co-owner/Director of 33 Collective Gallery, and Director of Visual Art Today.

Professor González-Andrieu is Assistant Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Her current areas of research include a methodology for relating the arts with religion, theology and spirituality, the theological insights of poet-playwright Federico García Lorca, and the expression of diverse Christologies in the arts. She is an award-winning author who has published work in Presente! U.S. Latino Catholics from Colonial Origins to the Present, Camino a Emaús, The Treasure of Guadalupe, and The Sky is Crying: Race, Class and Natural Disaster.

The series continues for two consecutive Mondays – September 28 and October 5 – wedding theology with literature and drama. More information including speakers, times and locations will be available soon at www.mccormick.edu.
