International Theological Conference at McCormick

McCormick Theological Seminary hosted an international conference, “Interfaith Relations and the Future of Theological Education” from August 15 -19. Participants included scholars from Brazil, Germany, South Korea and the U.S.

Conference participants analyzed the impact of and theological responses to interfaith relations within their four countries, reflected on the challenges and opportunities that the practice of interfaith relations bring to the future of theological education, toured and experienced Chicago as a global and multi-faith city and explored how Chicago’s several theological schools work with interfaith relations. 

During the week the group visited houses of worship, met with members of the Parliament of World Religions and took a tour of the nearby Oriental Institute, led by Dr, Ted Hiebert, McCormick’s Francis A. McGaw Professor of Old Testament. 

The scholars included Dr. Michael Biehl, Director of the Academy of Mission at the University of Hamburg and lecturer in the Department of Mission, Ecumenical Theology and Religious studies at the University of Hamburg; Dr. Robert A. Cathey, Professor of Theology at McCormick; Dr. Paul S. Chung, Associate Professor of Mission and World Christianity, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN; Dr. Ulrich Dehn, Professor of Missiology, Ecumenics and the Study of Religion in the Department of Protestant Theology, University of Hamburg, and Chair of the Board of the Academy of Mission, Hamburg, Germany; Dr. David Esterline, Director for the Institute for Cross-Cultural Theological Education and Associate Professor of Cross Cultural Education & Ministry at McCormick; Dr. Won Don Kang, Associate Professor at the Theological Faculty of the Hanshin University, Korea; Dr. Sung Young Kang, Dean of the Graduate School of Theology, and Professor of Christian Ethics at Hanshin University, Osan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea; Dr. Chang Joo Kim, Assistant Professor, Hanshin University,Osan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea; Dr. Myung Soo Kwon, Professor of Pastoral Care, Counseling, Theology in the Faculty of Theology at Hanshin University, Osan-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea; Dr. Esther Menn, Marilyn and Ralph Klein Chair of Old Testament Studies and Director of Advanced Studies Education at The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago; Dr. Luis Rivera-Rodriguez, James G.K. McClure Professor of Theological Education, Dean of the Faculty, and Vice President for Academic Affairs at McCormick, and Dr. Jung Mo Sung, Coordinator and Professor of Religious Studies, Graduate Program in Religious Studies, Methodist University of São Paulo, São Bernardo do Campo, SP, Brazil.
