Latin@ Center offers “Healing Hands” for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month again finds McCormick Theological Seminary’s Center for the Study of Latin@ Theology and Ministry partnering with the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and Catholic Theological Union to offer a multidisciplinary series of educational events around the theme of “Manos Sanadoras” (or “Healing Hands”), which celebrates the theological, cultural and civic contributions Latin@s are making to our contemporary society.

The first event begins tonight, September 27, 4 p.m., in the Lutheran School of Theology Common Room and features the Rev. Neddy H. Astudillo (Class of 1998), Pastor of Latino Ministries at Spirit of Hope Presbyterian Church in Beloit, Wisconsin. A self-described Eco-Theologian, Estudilla is speaking on Latin@ Eco-Theology: Listening to the New Voices of the Land.”
On October 13, a special combination lecture/art exhibit at Catholic Theological Union begins at 4 p.m. Dr. David A. Sanchez, Assistant Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, will be offering his thoughts on Hispanic art and Latino theology, and artist Sergio Gomez will be hosting an art show entitled "Coram Deo."
Concluding observance of Hispanic Heritage Month is Dr. Edwin Hernandez, who returns to McCormick to present The Health of Latino/a Churchgoers in Chicago and Health Outreach among Latino Congregations in Chicago, a report from the Institute for Latino Studies, University of Notre Dame. Hernandez is the Research Fellow at the Center for the Study of Latino Religion and Senior Program Officer for Research, Education, and Congregational Initiatives at the DeVos Family Foundations. The Center for the Study of Latin@ Theology and Ministry, established in 2003, is the successor of the Hispanic Ministries Program, which began in 1973. The work of the Center is an expression of McCormick’s longstanding commitment to the formation of Latin@ churches and theological leaders. More than 250 Latin@s have received masters and doctor of ministry degrees from McCormick.
