McCormick Installs Dr. David Daniels as Henry Luce Professor of World Christianity

The Rev. Dr. David D. Daniels III will be installed as the second Henry Winters Luce Professor of World Christianity during the opening convocation of McCormick Theological Seminary.
McCormick begins its new academic school year with its 183rd Convocation. The Rev. Dr. David D. Daniels III will be installed as the second Henry Winters Luce Professor of World Christianity during the opening 183rd Opening Convocation of McCormick Theological Seminary at the Augustana Chapel of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 4:15 p.m. The chair was created through a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. It is named in honor of Dr. Henry Winters Luce, a Presbyterian missionary in China in the early 1900s. His son, Henry R. Luce, co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Time magazine, was born in China during his parent’s service there.
Dr. Daniels came to McCormick in 1987, after completing his Ph.D. work in Church History at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Prior to serving at McCormick, he was an instructor of Religion at the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire.
Past co-chair of the Reformed and Pentecostal International Dialogue, Dr. Daniels served as a board member of the Christian Century Foundation, the Lake Institute on Faith and Giving, and the Global Impact, Inc.
Dr. Daniels has been an ordained minister of the Church of God in Christ since 1980 where he currently serves as the chair of the Board of Education for the denomination. He also has served on the Historical Commission, the Commission on Education, and Constitution Convention. Ecumenically, he has served as a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches Consultation on Pentecostalism, as well as an Ecumenical Delegate to the General Assembly Council off the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Dr. Daniels’ teaching career has taken him to Asia Pacific Theological Seminary, Sanguio City and Philippines and Regent University College, Accra, Ghana. He is the author of more than 20 book chapters and journals articles, among them are: “’Got A Right to the Tree of Life:’ Religious Jurisdiction, Religious Infrastructures and Urban Religious Territory” in CrossCurrents (Fall 2008); “African Immigrant Churches in the United States and the Study of Black Church History” in African Immigrant Religions in America, edited by Jacob Olupona and Regina Gemignani (New York: New York University Press, 2007); “Teaching Afresh the History of Global Christianity,” Shaping Beloved Community: Multicultural Theological Education, edited by David V. Esterline and Ogbu Kalu (Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2006).
In addition to his Ph.D. in Church History from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, Dr. Daniels holds a Master of Divinity from Yale University and a Bachelor of Arts from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine where he majored in religion and economics. He is married to Rev. Delois Brown-Daniels; they have a son, David IV, and a daughter, DeAndrea.
