Professor Emeritus Robert L Brawley Editor-in-Chief for 2-Volume Project

Oxford University Press has just published The Oxford Encyclopedia of Bible and Ethics (2014). McCormick Professor of New Testament Emeritus, Robert Brawley, is the editor-in-chief of the two-volume work. Brawley worked with an international team of Senior Editors, Ralph Klein of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Stephen Fowl of Loyola University of Maryland, Kathy Ehrensperger of the University of Wales, Trinity St. David, Isaac Kalimi of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, Germany, and Jan van der Watt of Radboud University of Nijmegen, Holland. The Encyclopedia of Bible and Ethics contains 194 article-length entries from international scholars designed to facilitate initial research in Bible and ethics. McCormick Professor of Theology Robert Cathey wrote the entry on “Vengeance.” The Encyclopedia, released on December 1, 2014, is now available.
Robert Brawley has also recently published a short commentary on Luke in the Fortress Commentary on the Bible (2014), a two-volume work containing commentaries on each book of the Bible.
Robert began his teaching career in 1965 at the Seminario Teológico Presbiteriano Asociado Reformado in Rio Verde, Mexico, and has also taught at Beaver College and Memphis Theological Seminary. In addition, he has held pastorates in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and of Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas. He has published numerous articles in publications including Journal of Biblical Literature, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, Perspectives in Religious Studies, Zeitschrift für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft, and Biblical Theology Bulletin. His published books include Luke-Acts and the Jews: Conflict, Apology, and Conciliation (1987); Centering on God: Method and Message in Luke-Acts (1990); and Text to Text Pours Forth Speech: Voices of Scripture in Luke-Acts (1995). He is also the editor of and a contributor to Biblical Ethics and Homosexuality: Listening to Scripture (1996) and Character Ethics and the New Testament: Moral Dimensions of Scripture (2007). He partnered with Michael Bachmann on Anti-Judaism in Galatians?: Exegetical Studies on a Polemical Letter and on Paul's Theology (2009) and with Peter Lampe on New Testament Theology in a Secular World: A Constructivist Work in Philosophical Epistemology and Christian Apologetics (2012)
Robert lives with his wife, Jane, in North Carolina.
The Robert Brawley Lecture in Gospel Studies is named for Robert L. Brawley, the Albert G. McGaw Professor of New Testament Emeritus at McCormick Seminary. It was established to address key issues in gospel studies, in honor of Dr. Brawley’s work and expertise in this area of scholarship.
