Rev. Jesús Márquez, Beloved Colleague and Alumnus
MARCH 31, 2025
Our hearts are heavy as we remember Rev. Jesús Márquez, MDiv 2013, a dear colleague and alumnus, who passed away on the morning of March 21, 2025. He was more than a professor; Rev. Jesús, as he was affectionately known, was a cherished friend, dedicated pastor, insightful teacher/mentor, deep thinker, and lifelong learner.
Rev. Jesús's ministry was marked by a rich ecumenical background, weaving together Pentecostal roots, fellowship with Catholic-Charismatic communities, and his Presbyterian (P.C.U.S.A.) seminary education. Born and raised in Chicago's vibrant Pilsen neighborhood, he carried his Mexican heritage with pride and a commitment to cross-cultural ministry.
"Jesús was care-filled in every sense of the word," shared Julian DeShazier, Director of Experiential Education, who worked closely with him. "He was filled with love and care for students, finding joy in accompanying them on their journeys. His faithful, thoughtful, and creative approach was infectious, and its influence will continue to guide every student in Experiential Education."
”Jesús returned as an alum to serve our learning community as an adjunct professor teaching various courses over many years,” recalled Dr. Jina Kang, Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. Rev. Jesús enriched student lives through courses like Leadership Amidst Diversity, Pilgrimage in Faithfulness, and his recent contributions to the MIN 404/405: Reflections on the Practice of Ministry teaching team. “We give thanks to God that Jesús’ ministry of care and presence is a part of the McCormick story,” affirmed Dr. Kang.
The impact of Jesús’ ministry as a devoted educator, inspiring theological thinker, and beloved friend on our McCormick community is being felt throughout as we mourn and remember.
Rev. Jesús's ministry extended beyond the classroom. He served Latino congregations through outreach and discipleship, ministered to a congregation in Englewood, and provided youth pastorship at a Korean-immigrant congregation in Park Ridge. He most recently served The Emmaus Community with wisdom, love, and unwavering commitment. A talented guitarist, he previously shared his passion for music with youth through the "Éxodo Guitar” urban project, supported by a 2011-2012 grant from the Forum for Theological Exploration.
We hold his family, especially his wife and children, and his church family in our prayers. We will forever remember his kindness and his profound influence. "Jesús was a unique gift to God’s Church," proclaimed Mr. DeShazier. "For his past here and future with us as an ancestor – Thanks Be to God!”
