Holinger and Ross, Distinguished Alumni for 2011

Our two Distinguished Alumni will be honored during McCormick Days at the President’s Luncheon on October 24.
Paul C. Holinger, MD, MPH, is Faculty, Training and Supervising Analyst, and Child Supervising Analyst at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, where he is Co-Chair of the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training Program; he is also Professor of Psychiatry at Rush University Medical College in Chicago.
Holinger earned his Master of Public Health from Harvard University, his MD from Chicago Medical School and his undergraduate degree from Trinity College. He earned his MDiv with honors from McCormick in 1971.
He has written numerous scholarly articles and books on psychiatric, epidemiology, psychoanalysis and infant and child development, including Suicide and Homicide Among Adolescents and Violent Deaths in the United States. His most recent book, What Babies Say Before They Can Talk: The Nine Signals Infants Use to Express Their Feelings, was a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and translated into several languages, including Spanish, Chinese and Arabic.
R. J. Ross, MDiv, MSA, is the founder, president and CEO of the Denver-based Samaritan Institute, which provides counseling based on psychology and theology. The Samaritan network includes 90 programs in 400 cities in the U.S. and Japan. Its counselors focus on children, adults, couples and families, wellness programs and training for clergy and other professionals.
Samaritan counseling is based on the following tenets: the human essence is an entwinement of mind, body, spirit, and community; Samaritan counselors are trained in both psychology and theology, are state certified or licensed, and understand and respect the religious perspectives of each counselee and incorporate these views, as appropriate, into the therapeutic process; Samaritan Centers are supported by fees from those who are served but keep costs low by good business practices and by emphasizing prevention and early treatment.
He received his Master of Science in Administration from the University of Notre Dame, his MDiv with honors from McCormick in 1971 and his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University.
