The Power of a Dream

I first heard about Black History Month about a year ago when I came to America. Among other things that I have learned about this month is that, this is “the perfect time to honor past African-American achievements, unite in the present, and inspire everyone to believe in the power of a dream as we join together to shape the future.” In this spirit, I would like to honor the memories of those who laid down their lives, fighting hard both at the forefront of history and in the background, paving the way for Black people to embrace their culture in a diversified way.

I celebrate the rise of pop culture, modern artists and people in the entertainment industry who promote Black culture as a beautiful thing – the influence is felt and embraced even far beyond American borders. Finally, I hold dearly the thoughts of leaders and poets like Maya Angelou, whose words of wisdom was a source of hope and inspiration to me, a young girl in the streets of Nairobi, who had nothing but a dream. Happy Black History Month.
