Role Summary

The Director of Youth Formation nurtures the spiritual growth of middle and high school youth at the Church of St. Paul & the Redeemer (SPR) by building relationships with youth, recruiting and supporting volunteers, and leading youth ministries, including youth formation, youth group, acolyting, service projects, and mission trips.

Responsibilities of the Director of Youth Formation

Sunday Ministries (Acolytes, Youth Formation & Youth Group)

· Attend 9:15 AM worship service.

· Prepare materials for youth formation (morning Christian education for middle school) and youth group (evening fellowship for middle and high school).

· Lead youth formation and youth group.

· Organize logistics for youth events.

· Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteer assistant leaders.

· Recruit, train, schedule, and support acolytes (with acolyte director).

 

Mission Trip

· Establish justice-focused, learning-oriented theme for summer mission trip.

· Recruit youth participants, adult chaperones, and adult prayer partners.

· Coordinate trip logistics, including meals, housing, and transportation.

· Plan and lead trip, in partnership with youth (see recent trip journal here).

· Plan Youth Sunday service in partnership with youth, to allow the entire church to learn from the youth about the subject of their trip.

Special Events

· Develop fellowship and service opportunities for youth.

· Provide parents and caregivers with resources to lead faith formation at home.

· Coordinate logistics for special events and trips throughout the year.

Communications & Documentation

· Communicate with youth and parents via weekly email and social media.

· Ensure and document that all volunteers have completed online Keeping God’s People Safe training and background checks, per diocesan policy.

Required Qualifications

· Previous experience working with youth in grades 6-12.

· Commitment to SPR’s progressive Christian mission, vision, and values.

· Commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppression praxis in youth ministry.

· Proficiency with email, Microsoft Office, and social media.

· Keeping God’s People Safe training (may be completed within 30 days of hire).

· Chicago ROAR anti-racism training (may be completed after hire).

 

Preferred Qualifications

· Previous experience in youth ministry in a progressive context.

· Previous experience supervising and training volunteers.

· Familiarity with Episcopal Church.

· Driver’s license.

· Background in education, theology, ministry, and/or social work.

Terms of Employment

· Compensation: $25 per hour

· Start date: September 1, 2021

· Part-time, non-exempt position averaging 10-12 hours per week, including:

o   Sundays (8:30-11:30 and 4:30-7:30 during program year)

o   Other weekend dates for special events, e.g. spring hiking trip

o   Staff meetings (flexible)

o   Setup, preparation, communication, and training time (flexible)

o   Mission trip week (Sunday through Friday, usually the second-to-last week of August; 2022 dates are August 21-26)
