ABOUT THE POSITION: The Director of Youth Ministry will nurture and mentor youth in their faith and in life, through fellowship, community building, prayer, worship and service. The work will focus on facilitating and enhancing existing programs; ministering both to and with middle and senior high school youth.

ABOUT OUR CHURCH: SCPC is a vibrant congregation of more than 750 members, located downtown in a large college town (Penn State University). We have a strong ministry team and a core of active and involved families. Activities range from mid-week fellowships with meals, intergenerational volunteer leadership, worship, retreats and mission. We are a welcoming, diverse and inclusive church.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Director of Youth Ministry reports directly to the Head of Staff. The Personnel Committee will meet with the Director a minimum of once a year for performance and salary review.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Director of Youth Ministry shall have demonstrated:

• A passion for inspiring and mentoring youth.

• An ability to be a welcoming, caring teacher with a high level of personal integrity.

• Inclusion and acceptance of diverse youth identities.

• A grounding in reformed theology; formal education in theology and religion is preferred, but not required.

• Leadership and organizing of high school and middle school youth programs.

• Effective communication skills, including the ability to convey ideas and listen attentively to youth, adult program leaders, fellow employees and other members of the church family.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are the principal, but not exclusive, responsibilities of this position:

1. YOUTH MINISTRY: Plan, cultivate and build upon our comprehensive youth ministry with middle and high school youth from the congregation and the community.

• Coordinate the administration of the youth programs, including supervision of the middle school youth program leader.

• Recruit, train, and lead volunteers in support of these programs.

• Manage weekly youth activities as well as special events.

• Support the Explore confirmation class program with the Pastor and other program staff.

• Equip youth for participation in worship.

• Plan and execute youth mission trips and retreats.

• Encourage youth participation in SCPC’s mission commitments.

• Be a compassionate friend to the congregation’s youth and their families, encouraging families to participate in the life of the church.

• Support the overall youth initiative from young children to college-age.

• Work with staff and volunteers to transition and bridge youth from the elementary to the middle school program.

• Work with the Associate Pastor for College-Age and Young Adult Ministry to help youth transition to post-high school ministries.

• Work to form intergenerational bonds between youth and older members of the congregation.

2. OTHER DUTIES:

• Participate in worship as coordinated with the Senior Pastor.

• Attend weekly staff meetings.

• Communicate program activities through bulletin boards, email, newsletter, website, etc.

• Submit monthly reports and attend monthly Education Ministry Unit meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

College undergraduate degree and training in youth ministry, or a combination of equivalent experience and training.

COMPENSATION: This is a full-time position with pay according to education and experience, including health benefits, vacation and pension package.
