The First Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn (FPC) is seeking a dynamic, high-energy, full-time Interim Minister to lead the church during its search for a Permanent Minister.

The candidate should be available in early 2023. They should be willing to serve at least 12-24 months. Housing and parking will be supplied. Salary for this position will be based on experience and will include benefits, housing, and parking.

This 200-year-old, intentionally inclusive and diverse Christian community committed to serving God in our world seeks an Interim Minister as we transition to new pastoral leadership and continue to expand our vital ministry to Brooklyn and beyond.  We strive for a world that works for everyone, a place where we all get to live into the calling God has placed in our hearts regardless of race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, immigration status, religion, physical ability, mental ability, or any other identifier that seeks to separate us from God and one another.

Our ministry includes a strong social action component comprised of five main initiatives. We have current mission involvement with congregations and ecumenical centers in Cuba. We have a food pantry and a community fridge serving our neighbors. We support farm workers and domestic workers on Long Island through the Eastern Farm Workers Association. We work with the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue to write postcards to under-represented voters in Florida. Finally, we have a strong ongoing relationship with the Church of Gethsemane and its outreach programs to people who are incarcerated.

Many traditions are reflected in the vital music and worship life of our church under the leadership of the Minister of Music.  Regularly included are gospel music, classical music, spirituals, jazz, chant, and folk.  Our choir reflects the diversity of the music. Music and mission are embedded in the intergenerational faith formation programs on Sunday mornings.  Children are encouraged to participate frequently in the 11 AM service and are made to feel a vital part of the church.

The candidate should work well with our established and dynamic staff sharing many responsibilities. The staff includes a Church Administrator, a Church Sexton, a Media & Technical Director, a Minister of Intergenerational Culture & Children, Youth & Families, and a Minister of Music.

Our services are currently hybrid with both an in-person and a remote component.  The remote component has allowed members who have relocated or are simply on vacation to participate in the life of the church.

Their responsibilities will include:

  • Lead worship and administer the sacraments

  • Provide spiritual and administrative leadership for the congregation

  • Make provisions for pastoral care for the congregation and for all who seek comfort and guidance through the church

  • Collaborate with the CWNC or the PNC, the Session, and the Congregation in preparations for the next phase of our search.

  • Serve as head of staff

  • Assist committees, formal and informal, in their ministries

  • Facilitate training of newly elected officers and assist in preparing persons for membership

  • Represent the church in the presbytery

  • Act as a steward of the search process--educating congregation, session, and pastoral nominating committee on the practical and spiritual aspects of the search process with respect to the PC(USA) tradition and the ecumenical backgrounds of our membership

  • Officiate at weddings and funerals
