The First Presbyterian Church of Chicago is a multiracial, multicultural, and multigenerational family of faith in the heart of Woodlawn. Through our long history, we have sustained a mission oriented to racial justice, education, and community development. We are in a season of redevelopment, which means we have liberty to experiment with new programs and partnerships and to try new things in worship. We are interested in hiring a Minister of Music who can bring ingenuity and energy to the role.
Music is one of the most important elements in the worshiping life of our church. Visitors and longtime members are drawn to the quality of our music programs. Our choirs have been a source of spiritual growth and belonging to many. The varieties of music we sing and hear in worship inspire us to worship the diverse and beautiful faces of God. The Minister of Music is an important leader in worship, working closely with the Pastor and Church members to craft imaginative and inspiring worshiping experiences.
Perks:
• Use of the church sanctuary, chapel, parlor, and music room as space for rehearsal, recitals, recordings, and/or offering lessons
• Additional income through occasional services, including weddings and funerals
• Flexible working arrangements during the week
Responsibilities:
• Meet with the Pastor weekly to discuss themes of worship and recommend music to complement those themes
• Prepare and play music on Sunday mornings (we have electric and baby grand pianos, but are open to a musician leading from a different instrument)
• Lead congregational singing, or collaborate with a vocalist
• Work with Pastor and Church elders to bring in local musicians for “special music”
• Work with Church members who are willing to engage their musical talents in worship
• Find ways to include the church’s children and youth in music on a monthly basis
