Reports to: Executive Director
The mission of A Just Harvest is to fight poverty and hunger in the Rogers Park and greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while cultivating community and economic development and organizing across racial, cultural and socio-economic lines in order to create a more just society.
Position Summary:
· Address community and social conditions that perpetuate poverty, racism, and hunger through building community, leadership development, and direct action
· Organize relationships with patrons, partners, community members and organizations to organize the fight to change the systemic issues that contribute to poverty, racism, and hunger.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Build community relationships, accompany and develop leaders to engage in collaboration, education, and direct action on issues which affect the community and contribute to structural racism, poverty and hunger.
2. Build and maintain an organizing arm of AJH that:
· Has clear and specific goals and strategies for achieving them
· Has a clear and democratic decision-making structure
· Is committed to agitation, accountability, and evaluation
· Frequently goes into action around issues
· Fosters intentional and ongoing relationship-building
· Strengthens relationships with community agencies and partnering orgs
· Strengthens relationships with city-wide coalitions focused on social justice
· Has a clear role and growth opportunity for leaders
· Organizes the directly affected around their self-interest
· Trains leaders for self-determination, self-advocacy, and civic engagement
· Is committed to political education and politicization of lived experiences
· Fosters an inclusive community space for all community members interested in engaging
· Recognizes the privilege of organizing and meets folx where they’re at
· Is fluid and adaptive in responding to the unique & changing interests and needs of the community
· Is intentional and serious about raising money
3. Raise money from foundations and other sources to fund the AJH organizing work. Works cross-departmentally to create funding proposals for new and existing research and programming; presents to donors and potential donors.
Qualifications
· Commitment to human liberation and movement-building
· Experience in community organizing
· Strong interpersonal skills
· Ability to work with diverse communities
· Familiarity with public policy advocacy
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Strong commitment to leadership development and democratic decision-making
· Able to handle multiple simultaneous projects & tasks with minimal supervision
· Detail-oriented
· Self-motivated
· Bi-lingual Spanish/English Preferred—not required
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Work with Communications Consultants to build digital strategy that compliments the overall strategy of the organization and campaign strategies
· Identify and engage campaign supporters and drive measurable online actions
· Curate and develop creative content such as infographics, memes, key messages etc.
· Utilize social media and other digital tools (texting programs, e-blast etc) to maximize digital list building
· Deepen supporters sense of identity and involvement with organization and campaigns, including both online and offline engagement
· Understand and apply data analytics related to the organization and campaigns’ email list, website, and social media channels to improve the effectiveness of the work
· Support traditional media work and cultivate relationships with media to facilitate coverage of actions and events; cover actions and events using live digital tools
Qualifications and Skills:
· Demonstrated skills in organizing and community outreach (experience with digital and/or coalition organizing preferred)
· Experience using online tools to effectively tell the story of a campaign, build digital strategy, identify and activate supporters
· Commitment to understand race, class, gender, and other equity issues as part of your work as well as the impact these structural issues have on our collective work environment
· Belief in and commitment to progressive social, racial, and economic justice
· Deep connection to people and organizations in the county of work
· Superior interpersonal skills, an ability to work with a diverse array of individuals and communities, and an ability to challenge people to take risks in order to make change
· Exceptional oral and written communication skills
· Ability to receive and integrate performance based feedback into ongoing work plans as well as the ability to provide relevant and timely feedback to peers in a constructive manner
