Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church (GPWPC) is seeking a part time Minister for a transitional period. Based on interviews and discussions to date the position is an opportunity for a forthcoming Reverend who is yet to be ordained and therefore does not have all the qualifications necessary for all aspects of the position if such person is guided by an experience Pastor.
As a result GPWPC developed a team approach which provides an opportunity for experienced Pastors who wish to continue in ministry in a focused or limited extent and for those Pastors who are yet to be ordained and would benefit from a mentoring relationship. The requirements of the position would be divided into two components. The exact allocation of responsibilities would be based on the needs of the two Pastors as well as the needs of the church. Flexibility in structuring the duties and time requirements of the positions to meet the needs of all concerned is a key part of this approach.
The general concept is that one component might be called a “Mentoring Pastor”. This position would be responsible for Moderating Session, preaching approximately once per month (twice per month if 5 Sundays in the month), performing Sacraments (if required on the Sundays when preaching), and coaching a yet to be ordained part time Temporary Supply Pastor. The hours to be worked as well as the compensation would be developed consistent with the objective of permitting a qualified candidate to contribute to the Church while enjoying flexibility and the fruits of a well spent life. The mentoring aspect of the position would also provide the opportunity to contribute to the development an up and coming Pastor.
The second component is the Part Time Temporary Supply Pastor or Pastor Mentee. This Pastor would attend Session Meetings, attend various committee meetings as required, preach 3 Sundays per month, and perform other duties as described in the attached job description (except for any duties to be performed by the Mentoring Pastor). The Part Time Temporary Supply Pastor would seek guidance and direction as needed from the Mentoring Pastor. Hours to be worked as well as compensation would be developed consistent with the duties and time requirement of the position. One might think of the Transitional Team as an Internship for aspiring Pastors.
Note on GPWPC Community Outreach:
GPWPC has been renting substantial unused space in its building to charitable organizations such as Caught Up which mentors and counsels “at risk” teenage men from the eastside of Detroit, Detroit Made which mentors and trains aspiring teen athletes from the east side, and Sister Judies Outreach which provides and delivers food to needy Detroit residents in the Detroit Farmers Market area, and others. We believe providing safe, attractive, and affordable space to charitable organizations is a major part of our mission and view these organizations as our partners in Mission. Supporting and growing our outreach to the community beyond Grosse Pointe with these partners is an important role of the Team Ministry and we are looking for Pastors who share this vision.
