McCormick Promotes Bonhoeffer Scholars Dr. Reggie L. Williams and Dr. Jennifer McBride

McCormick Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that two members of its faculty, both globally-recognized scholars on the life and theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, were promoted in rank over the course of 2020-21. Dr. Jenny McBride, who serves as the President of the International Bonhoeffer Society (English Language Section), was promoted to Associate Professor. In addition, a three-year extension of her term as Associate Dean for Doctor of Ministry Programs and Associate Professor of Theology was approved by the McCormick Board at its February 2021 meeting. Dr. Reggie L. Williams, who wrote the groundbreaking book Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance, was promoted to the rank of full professor at McCormick’s April 2021 Board meeting.
Dr. Williams joined the McCormick faculty in 2012 as Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics. His book was named Outstanding Academic Title by Baylor Press and won Dr. Williams recognition in as a Black Christian Social Ethicist. His academic interests address the problem of an idealized humanity and community in Western world Christianity. By asking what it means to be Christian and human, Williams explores how to recover from the distortions that turn Christ into a site for the promotion of harmful religious practices. His work draws widely upon Black studies, theological studies, and Christian Ethics. Currently, he is working on several books among them being The Human as a Problem for Christian Ethics. Dr. Williams also serves McCormick as the founding director of the Initiative for Incarnational Ethics.
Dr. McBride started at McCormick in 2016 as the Associate Dean for Doctor of Ministry Programs and Assistant Professor of Theology. Trained on the method of lived theology, McBride’s work on lived theology has resulted in her books The Church for the World: A Theology of Public Witness, Bonhoeffer and King: Their Legacies and Import for Christian Social Thought, and Radical Discipleship: A Liturgical Politics of the Gospel. Her next book, You Shall Not Condemn: A Story of Faith and Advocacy on Death Row (2021), departs from her previous work but reflects her work teaching theology in a women’s prison in Georgia. She developed a similar project when she arrived at McCormick now known as the Solidarity Building Initiative focused on carceral education at Cook County Jail.
The Board of Trustees voted to affirm the work of the faculty and signal its support for these two vital faculty members. Responding to the promotion of the Drs. McBride and Williams, Dr. Steed Davidson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty notes “these two faculty members in their own way reflect the emerging emphases that will mark McCormick’s teaching in the years to come. We are absolutely thrilled that they could come to this critical place in their careers here with us.” President David Crawford added, “It is truly an honor to work with both Reggie and Jenny. Together, they represent our future and reflect McCormick’s historic commitment to ground-breaking scholarship coupled with a passionate commitment to justice and advocacy.”
In response to her promotion, Dr. McBride said, “I have found McCormick to be a place that honors my vocation as bridge and affirms the creative tension it brings. Here I have been affirmed and challenged, encouraged to bring older commitments into the work of this community and gently pushed in new direction with added responsibilities that necessitate new skill sets.” Dr. Williams observes “McCormick Theological Seminary has helped me to discern my calling, and my vocation as a theological ethicist. I am indebted to this place.”
