Rev. Dr. David Esterline to Participate in World Mission Institute 2014

The theme this year is "Together Towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes"

McCormick partners with LSTC and CTU every year in this conference -- this year to discuss missions in the contemporary world. Keynote Speaker Adele Halliday and panelists will bring the topics into sharp focus. McCormick's David Esterline traveled to Busan, Korea in the fall with a group of McCormick students.

Held this year at LSTC, the Institute will begin Thursday evening, April 24, and conclude on Friday afternoon, April 25. For a complete schedule, download the brochure. 

On Thursday evening, Adele Halliday will keynote the event with a lecture entitled "Together Transformed." Adele Halliday works at the national office of the United Church of Canada as the Team Leader for Discipleship & Witness in the Church in Mission Unit. She has been a main organizer of several conferences on intercultural ministry, and participated in the special assembly of the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism that produced a final draft of "Together Towards Life." She also attended the Tenth Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Busan, Korea.

On Friday morning, a panel discussion will consider the theme for this year's gathering. The ecumenical panel discussion will include:

In October, 2013, the Tenth Assembly of the World Council of Churches took place in Busan, Korea. At this Assembly was presented a new document on Mission--the first document on Mission in 30 years--entitled "Together Towards Life: Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes." It is a document that highlights the work of the Holy Spirit within the Mission of the Trinity, emphasizes the importance of the care of creation in the church's missionary work today, and reflects on the fact that Mission is no longer an activity from the world's affluent and rich center but one that takes place from the world's margins.

This year's World Mission Institute will study and celebrate this important new source for missionary reflection and practice. Participants will hear from women and men who took part in both the drafting of the Mission document and who attended the Busan Assembly, and will be engaged in a critical conversation with the document as well.
