McCormick Names Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship

McCormick Theological Seminary announces the appointment of Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes as Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship. He will join the McCormick faculty in July and will begin teaching during the fall term.

Previously, Dr. Carvalhaes taught at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia as an associate professor of Liturgy and Worship and at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Carvalhaes is an ordained teaching elder within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) McCormick President Frank Yamada said, “I can think of few leaders in theological education who inspire like Cláudio Carvalhaes. He has been on the cutting edge of cross-cultural worship within the PCUSA. He is a voice of liberation among communities of color, an advocate for young adults, and a prophetic presence among those who are pushing the church into the 21st century. We are thrilled that he will be joining us at McCormick.”

Carvalhaes is the author of four books, including three books in Portuguese as well as "Eucharist and Globalization: Redrawing the Borders of Eucharistic Hospitality" (2013). He has authored chapters in 15 edited volumes along with 33 articles. He has given presentations and delivered sermons at over 30 conferences as well as academic societies.

Carvalhaes, a native Brazilian, completed his Ph.D. in Liturgy and Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 2007. He earned his first Master of Philosophy degree in Theology, Philosophy, and History at the Methodist University of Sao Paulo in 1997 and a Master of Divinity degree from the Independent Presbyterian Theological Seminary (Sao Paulo, Brazil) in 1992.

The Dean of Faculty Dr. Ted Hiebert stated, “Dr. Carvalhaes is recognized throughout the United States and in the larger global context as a leader and innovator in preaching and worship. He’s a compassionate and compelling teacher and a creative scholarly voice. We welcome him as an important and engaging conversation partner among us as we work to support and renew the church.”

A member of the American Academy of Religion and the North American Academy of Liturgy, Dr. Carvalhaes serves on the editorial or advisory board of academic journals, including Cross-Currents as well as Postcolonial Studies. Besides the United States, he has lectured in Brazil, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Canada, Germany, and Mozambique.

McCormick is one of 12 schools related to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
