Riegel Presents at Society of Biblical Literature Conference

02-05-2013

The Midwest Region of the Society of Biblical Literature has invited Master of Divinity student Kristin Riegel to present her paper, Queen Vashti and Issues of Power, Resistance, and Personal Agency in Esther 1:10-22.

Kristin’s paper will be presented during the Gender, Sexuality, and Post-Modern Biblical Methodologies session. The Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 9 from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. at Olivet Nazarene University (Room: Burke 413) in Bourbonnais, IL.

Kristin’s professor, Kelly Whitcomb, encouraged her to submit a proposal to submit the paper. Professor Whitcomb says, “In the short time I have worked with Kristin, she has consistently demonstrated the ability to work with biblical studies, ethics and the social sciences to engage challenging issues concerning the Bible and culture. In her paper on Vashti, she exemplifies this ability by interpreting Vashti as a figure of resistance with the aid of anthropology. It is an excellent piece of exegesis that accomplishes what many biblical scholars are still attempting to do—read the biblical text closely with fresh perspectives developed in dialogue with social theory.”

The McCormick Community celebrates Kristin’s accomplishment.
