LEAD 2013: Leadership, Education and Development for the Whole Church

01-24-2013

By B. Vaughan

McCormick and Chicago Presbytery partner to present annual leadership event set for March 2.

As a leader in cross-cultural theological education, McCormick Theological Seminary is well equipped to serve as an educational resource for the region’s premiere Presbyterian training event, L.E.A.D. 2013: Love One Another. Co-sponsored with the Presbytery of Chicago, L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Education and Development for the Whole Church) is scheduled for March 2, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton.

The event features a full day of workshops designed to enhance the skills of pastors and laypersons leading congregations and faith communities through the blessings and challenges facing the contemporary Church. Before dispersing for morning workshops, attendees will gather for opening worship led by the Rev. Dr. Margaret Aymer Oget, who is the Associate Professor of New Testament and Chair of Biblical Studies at the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, GA. Following worship, Rev. Dr. Oget will share her thoughts on "Becoming 'Verse Two' Christians in a 'Verse One' World: Confessing the Beatitudes Globally and Locally" in her morning workshop

The range of topics reflects a commitment to both traditional and more progressive understandings of church and ministry as well as a focus on particular issues from stewardship to evangelism to inter-cultural ministry. While the Rev. Dr. Eddie Knox, former McCormick Trustee and Pastor of Pullman Presbyterian Church, examines practical evangelism for numerical and spiritual growth, the Rev. Reggie Weaver of First Presbyterian Church of Chicago will lead a workshop on the Narrative Lectionary. Several workshops address the needs and care churches in times of change and transition.

This year, we're privileged to have the Rev. Shawna Bowman (McCormick, 2009) as our "artist-in-residence". As she works during LEAD, Shawna will create a new logo for LEAD which will debut at LEAD 2014!

We're pleased to welcome participants from Blackhawk Presbytery to this event!

LEAD 2013 is sponsored by the Empower Ministry Mission Priority Leadership Team of the Presbytery of Chicago, McCormick Theological Seminary and our host church, First Presbyterian Church, Wheaton.

Books recommended by our keynote speaker and workshop presenters will be available for purchase. Ten Thousand Villages, a fair trade organization, will have unique, hand-made items for sale.
