The Rev. Dr. Yvonne Delk to Speak at God Can United Church of Christ

Dr. Delk is the founding director of the Center for African American Theological Studies (a program of the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education-SCUPE).

The Rev. Dr. Sharon Ellis Davis, Director of McCormick’s Center for African American Ministries and Black Church Studies announced today that Rev. Dr. Yvonne V. Delk will preach at God Can Ministries United Church of Christ on Sunday, May 20, 2012. Rev. Delk will preach at a noon service and at a 4:00 P. M. service. The church is located in Ford Heights at 1100 Greenwood.

“We are delighted that Dr. Delk has accepted our invitation to speak. She is known internationally for her social justice work. Dr. Delk has been a strong ally in the fight for human and civil rights for people of color, children and the poor. She has served as teacher, educator, preacher, executive, organizer and author in the United States and the wider global community,” said Dr. Ellis Davis.

Dr. Delk has held numerous denominational leadership positions in the areas of Christian education and social justice within the United Church of Church. In 1974, she became the first African American woman ordained in the United Church of Christ and later, the first African American woman to head the Office for Church in Society in the United Church of Christ.

Dr. Delk has a Doctor of Ministry degree from New York Seminary and a Master of Religious Studies from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. She has been a visiting professor and has taught courses in Urban Ministry, Black Church Education and the United Church of Christ Polity and History at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge.
