Position description

Northbrook Covenant Church in Northbrook, IL, is seeking a part time Director of Music Ministries to lead its praise team in facilitating musical worship for Sunday services. The Director will coordinate with the pastor and accompanist to select music, arrange for team practices, and facilitate arrangements with the worship team. Selections are generally a blend of contemporary and traditional music and arrangements can vary from basic accompaniment to larger ensembles. The ability to direct a choir is a plus. Field Education is available if the candidate is seeking training for future ministry, as well as expanded ministry opportunities depending on the gifts of the candidate.

A. QUALIFICATIONS

1. The Director of Music Ministries shall demonstrate a vital, personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and be in agreement with the principles and beliefs of NECC and its denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church of America.

2. The DMM shall exhibit qualities of spiritual leadership with the ability to lead the congregation in worship.

3. The DMM shall have experience and expertise in church music. Instrumental skills are an asset.

B. RESPONSIBILITIES

The DMM is responsible for overseeing and directing various ministries of music, which will include the choir and praise team and may include a variety of instrumental ensembles. The DMM plans music for a blended style of worship and special services. Professional duties include:

1. Coordinating and developing the overall music ministry, consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the church.

2. Leading the congregation in glorifying God through diverse expressions of music (traditional hymns, contemporary music, anthems, etc.) and other art forms.

3. Working with the lead pastor, the pianist and others in planning Sunday morning worship and seasonal or special events.

4. Managing administrative functions for the ministry of music: budgeting, long-range planning, coordinating music/worship events within the church calendar, purchasing musical supplies and coordinating the repair of musical instruments.

5. Recruiting people to become a part of the music/worship ministries.

6. Leading the praise team in worship services and rehearsals. Direction of the choir is also desirable.

7. Arranging for substitutes as needed.

8. Providing a written report of the worship/music ministry for the church’s annual meeting

C. RELATIONSHIP TO THE CHURCH

The DMM shall be responsible to the lead pastor and through him to the leadership of the church.

D. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHURCH TO THE DMM

1. Providing support, direction, and mentoring through the pastoral staff and lay leaders and assisting in the recruitment of lay volunteers.

2. Providing appropriate resources for an effective worship/music ministry.

3. Encouraging personal growth through personal study and continuing education.
