Associate Pastor, Bloomington First Presbyterian Church, Bloomington, Indiana

Listed: 5-31-23

Employer: Bloomington First Presbyterian Church, 221 East Sixth Street Bloomington, IN 47408, | (812) 332-1514

Location: Bloomington, Indiana

Position: Full-time

Webpage: https://www.fpcbloomington.org

Contact: David Giedroc

Job Description: Job Description

Description of First Presbyterian Church Bloomington

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry

Celebrating Christ, we offer worship that is spiritually uplifting, with preaching given in a spirit of trust, vulnerability, and relatability. This witness to Christ challenges and encourages us to outward facing action.

As the oldest church in Bloomington, we celebrate 200 years of commitment to our community from the heart of downtown, between the courthouse square and IU’s Sample Gates. Our historic church features an expansive sunlit sanctuary, breathtaking stained glass windows and a stunning Fritts pipe organ. We share our sacred space with an active Korean congregation and 25+ community groups, including those who are seeking grace and recovery from addiction. Our building has been used to feed and shelter those facing housing insecurity, a chronic challenge in our city.

Our membership reflects an inclusive community of God’s children, and we embrace and honor our differences. In our active, multigenerational congregation, children and youth create lasting relationships with adults, and our many retirees are vital and foundational to our ministry. All are empowered to be full and active participants in the life of our church.

Our commitment to service is interfaith and interdenominational, exemplified by a 30-year relationship with our sister Catholic church in Posoltega, Nicaragua. We treasure the friendships we forge with them, and it reminds us of what we perpetually seek to be: a congregation of fellowship, community engagement, and boundary-crossing faith.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor will work closely to mutually define roles and responsibilities. The Associate Pastor will have primary responsibility for Christian education for all ages. They will oversee childcare providers, develop the spiritual growth of our children and youth, and work with parents to strengthen our ministry to the young and their families. The Associate Pastor will conduct confirmation classes, support teachers, invigorate education options for adults, and partner with the Christian Education Committee to enrich those ministries. The Associate Pastor will collaborate in leading worship, and spiritually prepare throughout the week for this crucial work. The Associate Pastor will preach once a month, administer sacraments, prepare for and lead children's time, conduct weddings and funerals, and be a worshipful presence in our church.

Our leaders serve with our congregation, not for our congregation. The Associate Pastor will share in pastoral care activities, serve as staff liaison to the Board of Deacons, partner with lay leaders to spiritually lead, plan and attend our mission trips, foster relationships with other congregations to enhance opportunities for education and service, and remain active in the work of the larger Church. This call provides an opportunity to develop one’s own interests and gifts in ministry in a supportive and stimulating environment, while honoring the importance of engaging in a meaningful life outside the church.

Solo Pastor, Katonah Presbyterian Church, Katonah, New York

Listed: 5-22-23

Employer: Katonah Presbyterian Church, 31 Bedford Road, Katonah, NY 10536,| (914) 232-4568

Location: Katonah, New York

Position: Full-time

Webpage https://www.katonahpresbyterian.org

Contact: Peggy Martin

Job Description: Job Description

Description of Katonah Presbyterian Church

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

1. What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Katonah Presbyterian enjoys a keen sense of community. Celebrating 150 years, KPC has had a lasting impact on the community with many local charities beginning as a church program or by a member of the Church.

Mutual care of one another, especially during difficult times, is pronounced. Care is offered through prayer, meals, transportation, and visits. The most notable effort to make God’s love visible in the community is the week-long Rummage Sale every Spring. We have also partnered with the two nearby Correctional Facilities, the Community Center, and NYC homeless to help those often overlooked. Our mission dollars reach immigrant workers, local shelters, disaster relief in the U.S. and Caribbean, and many charitable organizations.

Sunday worship is central to the life of our church. We have benefitted from socially conscious and strong intellectual pastoral leadership. Sermons incorporate references to current events, modern literature, and a refreshed lens through which to view the gospel message. The diverse music program incorporates piano and organ music, several bell choirs, a worship choir, and instrumental music. Sunday school is held for children during the service, and high school youth have fellowship afterward. Both the bell and youth groups travel domestically and internationally on mission trips.

We want to take steps to safeguard and build upon these strengths, while exploring how to concentrate our efforts, given declining numbers and aging population.

2.For what specific tasks, assignments, and programs areas will this person have responsibility?

We understand the expectations set forth are extensive and all-encompassing. That is a challenge for any interested candidate. The leadership and congregation commit to working with our pastor in formulating priorities and setting parameters or boundaries for the work to be accomplished. Areas of responsibility:

  • Plan worship with input from music staff and Worship committee (incl. liturgists, children’s sermon).

  •  Combine passion for scripture with courage to trial new ways of sharing the message.

  •  Administer Sacraments. Officiate at Weddings and Funerals. Prepare youth for Confirmation.

  •  Be familiar with members and families. Proactively outreach to less frequent visitors.

  •  Attend fellowship events and meetings: Nominating, Worship, Deacons, Presbytery, others as possible.

  •  Coordinate multiple committees, promoting appropriate governance or organizational change.

  •  Oversee staff and volunteers.

  •  Seek the best in everyone to accomplish our mission: funding (Finance & Stewardship), the physical plant (Buildings & Grounds), participation (Visibility, Membership and Fellowship).

  •  Communicate to inform, connect, and align.

  •  Encourage a vibrant Presbyterian Women's organization.

  •  Confidentially call on congregants suffering from illness or loss, making referrals to specialists, coordinating with Deacons.

  •  Overall demonstrate how a pastor and congregation can deliver care, sensitivity, hospitality and teaching to further our mission.

Additionally, we are trying to elevate our communication with congregants and our community. We are exploring ways to meet the multigenerational worship preferences that exist within our congregations of faith. While we are financially blessed, gratitude-based giving can be hampered by the financial blessings that we are afforded.
