General Presbyter, Grace Presbytery - Irving, TX

Listed 05-21-2021

Employer: Grace Presbytery, 6100 Colwell Blvd, Ste 100, Irving, TX 75039-3148 | 214-630-4502 | www.gracepresbytery.org

Location: Irving, TX

Start Date: 08-01-2021

Type: Full Time

Please check out their MIF # 72495.AB0 for additional information and self-referral details on the Church Leadership Connection.

Grace Presbytery comprises 140 congregations with over 27,000 members scattered across 53 counties in North and Central Texas. We are the largest Presbytery in the Presbyterian Church (USA). Our size and diversity presents a unique opportunity for a visionary leader experienced in managing change, leveraging resources, and equipping others to lead in bold, new directions.

Throughout the Presbytery, there is a vision of a Church that is filled up in worship and education so that we may be poured out into the world. That is, the Church is not just a building, with targeted programming meant to make us feel good. Instead the Church exists for the sake of Jesus Christ, who commands us to go into the world to spread His Gospel in word and deed.

We are praying for a leader who can help us more thoroughly discover God’s vision for our Presbytery, articulate it in a compelling way, and lead us forward into that vision together. For now, we live into this vision by encouraging creative and contextual responses in this time of great change. We live out this vision of life together through Presbytery-wide mission study trips, resource center, programs, committees, education, worship, and gatherings. With the plentiful financial and personnel resources within the Presbytery, we build each other up and bridge the geographical and theological diversity through the gift of relationships, so that more and more might be drawn in by the love of Christ.

To respond to the needs of our community, Grace Presbytery has built a strong central support system, with reliable staff, financial opportunities, and programmatic options. Whether it’s the quarterly gathering of Christian educators for support and inspiration, or the recently created Social Justice Task Force to support our congregations as they take on systemic justice issues, or Disaster Assistance Task Force from the Congregational Support Committee to walk alongside congregations in times of hardship, Grace Presbytery seeks to partner with congregations to address their emerging needs.

We also recognize that our Presbytery was designed as a twentieth-century corporation. While that structure has served us well in the past, we are also open to the movement of the Spirit and the call from God to bring in something new – new ways of doing ministry, new ways of being connected, new ways of reaching out. Grace Presbytery is in a remarkable place for something new to be born, and we’re looking for a General Presbyter to be our midwife for that new vision.

The next General Presbyter will help our churches find their path forward, through our committees, commissions, staff, teaching elders, ruling elders, commissioned lay pastors, and members. We want our churches to thrive, meaning that our Presbytery is changing lives, churches, and communities for the sake of the Gospel. That may look different in different places at different times, but we rely on the one Spirit that unites us together. Our new leader should bring ideas for twenty-first century ministries and how our institution can shift to be more responsive and nimble to the mission needs around us. We are not expecting our new Presbyter to have all the answers, but instead to have the pastoral presence and discerning leadership qualities to guide us where the Spirit leads, to understand the need for adaptive change in this season of church life, and to equip us for the work of ministry.

We do recognize the challenge present in creating meaningful space and relationships in the reach of our Presbytery: for new ministries to be birthed while others close with dignity; for churches with three and 3000 members and those in-between to feel like they belong; for the rural churches and the urban churches to appreciate each other’s gifts; for unhealed wounds that need tender care and are easily overlooked in the everyday business demands. But we also believe that God is not done yet working through Grace Presbytery, and that the right leadership can help us reach our vision and mission goals.

Full description.

Background:

On May 6, 2015, in response to a movement spanning three decades, the Chicago City Council passed historic legislation providing reparations to the survivors of racially-motivated police torture committed between 1972 and 1991–specifically, the twenty years of police torture orchestrated by CPD Commander Jon Burge and detectives under his command. This makes Chicago the first municipality in the United States to provide reparations to those harmed by racially-motivated law enforcement violence.

The push for reparations was driven by the lack of redress for systemic harms; the package provides for financial compensation to the survivors; job training; free education at the City Colleges; an official apology; required teaching in the Chicago public schools; and a public memorial. Lastly, the Ordinance requires the creation of a community center informed by the needs of survivors of police torture, their family members, and community members. The Center is the first in the nation to provide specialized trauma services to those tortured by law enforcement officials within the U.S. The Center continues to pursue expanded reparations for all survivors of police torture and is part of and supports a movement to end all forms of police violence.

Listed 03-30-2021

Employer: Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, 6601 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD 20817 | 301-365-2850 | www.bradleyhillschurch.org

Location: Bethesda, MD

Start Date: 09-01-2021

Type: Full Time

Please check out their MIF # 00430.AF0 for additional information and self-referral details on the Church Leadership Connection. This position is suitable for a first call and would include a housing allowance.

We are living out a strategic plan in which God is calling Bradley Hills to welcome visitors and members fully, nurture disciples in faith, heal through pastoral care and interfaith dialogue and serve our community and world. Our next Associate Pastor will play a critical role in helping us connect, grow spiritually and live out our mission to be the church Christ is calling us to be.

Our charge is to grow disciples by fostering relationships and building community: pouring our lives into the needs of others throughout our community and the world; making our church a space for spiritual refreshment, reconciliation, and interfaith dialogue and engagement; celebrating in worship through preaching, music, and arts; seeking to understand the theological, ethical and social issues we face in the world today; learning through listening, studying the Word and sharing in intergenerational small groups; and being a church where everyone has a deep sense of commitment and belonging.

We care deeply about social justice and are engaged in a number of conversations and activities about and related to our role in helping reduce systemic racism in our world.

Our vision is to be a vibrant, caring community that draws and energizes people to grow in faith, serving together to make every breath count. Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church (BHPC) is a welcoming witness to the love of Jesus Christ. We believe that diversity in our membership and leadership—different ages, genders, ethnicities, abilities, races, sexual orientations, ideological and theological beliefs, and experiences—is an important strength. We come from across the nation, from different denominational backgrounds and from around the world. We are all God’s children, united by God’s love.

We are a church with many new members having joined in recent years and many families with children joining our community. We feel called to meet the emerging needs of this community. At the same time, we have many long-time members in need of pastoral care and belonging as well.

We hope our next Associate Pastor will help us strengthen our sense of connection, community and belonging, will help in supporting and caring for members, will lead small group ministry, will support mission, will minister to youth and older adults, and will help our many newer members connect more deeply in the body of Christ.

Located in the beautiful hill country near San Antonio, St. Mark is in the rapidly growing city of Boerne. We extend a welcoming atmosphere to visitors and members in both contemporary and traditional worship services. We have a strong Christian education program, an on-campus Early Learning Center, an uplifting and diverse music program, an active mission program, and a compassionate pastoral care program. Please refer to our MIF # 03449.AE0 for additional information and self-referral details on the Church Leadership Connection.

St. Mark is called in many ways to reach out to the community and beyond. It has demonstrated in the past, and continues to place for the future, a high priority on the outreach aspects of its ministries. Locally, support has been provided to St. Mark’s Early Learning Center, Boerne’s only nationally accredited preschool, and to Boerne’s bread ministry, family services and pregnancy center. Regionally, St. Mark has supported the Presbyterian Children’s Home, the Presbyterian Pan American School, Schreiner University and Austin Theological Seminary. St. Mark gives generously to the four special offerings of the PC(USA) and has been recognized for its level of commitment to these offerings.

With respect to addressing our own constituency, St Mark has an active and committed ten-member Diaconal ministry team which strives to serve God by serving others. That service is exemplified by our prayer ministry, visitation ministry, meal deliveries and transportation assistance for members in need.

St. Mark strives to allocate 10% of its total budget to outreach ministries. It would be absolutely impossible to effectively support all of the above-mentioned projects with this funding alone. However, members of St. Mark continue to be extremely generous with not only funding for special outreach opportunities, but also with the gift of their time.

As part of the body of Reformed churches, we glorify God by offering two worship opportunities (contemporary and traditional), in which we affirm our faith in the one Triune God. With the many gifts the Holy Spirit has given to our diverse community of believers at St. Mark, we endeavor to carry the Word into the community, exhibiting the love of Jesus Christ in our daily life. We are a servant church, dedicated to Bible-based Christian education, community outreach and support of Presbyterian missions and other missions locally and throughout the world. We believe it is important that we prayerfully foster a caring and dynamic community of believers, sharing with all people the Good News of the love of God, of repentance, and of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior.

To fulfill our mission and vision goals, the congregation desires to partner with the new pastor to:

  • Achieve stability with a new Pastor, Head of Staff who provides vision, leadership and relatability

  • Increase membership obtaining advantages of a medium-sized vibrant church

  • Attract younger families with children and youth

  • Reach out beyond the church walls to do more in the Boerne community

  • Help church members grow in spiritual maturity and discipleship

  • To quote a church banner: “Rekindle the Passion!”

Solo Pastor - Bella Vista, AR

Please refer to our MIF # 10870.AD0 for additional information and self-referral details on the Church Leadership Connection.

The Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista (PCBV), located in a metropolitan area in Northwest Arkansas, is an active, welcoming congregation seeking a pastor. The demographics of Bella Vista are changing. PCBV’s aging population, coupled with a younger, growing community, creates challenging yet exciting opportunities in a unique community in the beautiful Ozarks.

Established in 1985, the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista (PCBV) is a friendly and welcoming congregation of mostly active, involved senior citizens. Bella Vista, a community of over 30,000 people located in the scenic Ozarks, is part of a fast-growing metropolitan area commonly referred to as Northwest Arkansas (NWA). With a total population exceeding 500,000, NWA is home of three Fortune 500 companies and has a multitude of amenities to offer residents and visitors alike. Bella Vista, with its seven lakes, golf courses and biking and hiking trails, offers a wide variety of social and recreational activities.

As more young and diverse families are moving into the area, we recognize the need to reach that population and others in the community. Having Jesus Christ in our hearts allows us to extend love to others and lead them to Christ. We are a nurturing and loving congregation and continue to reach out to provide God’s love to our neighbors, near and far, but we must continue the bold steps the founders of PCBV took as we address the wants and needs of our current congregation as well as those of our changing community and society. We want to practice spiritual growth without judgment and without sectarian or political partisanship and continue to be a welcoming body of believers to others in our midst.

PCBV is well-known in our community and Presbytery. Outreach and missions are an integral part of our congregation’s life, and we are actively involved in both local and state mission projects. This is evident in support of local schools and nonprofits, roadside trash pickup, blood drives and many other local organizations. State and nationwide mission efforts include significant support of our Presbytery, women’s and children’s shelters, Presbyterian Disaster Relief, multiple colleges and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. International aid is given through support of missionaries and mission trips.

Our congregation’s support and involvement in missions have evolved over the years as needs have changed. We recognize the necessity to broaden our approach to missions as our community and the world continue to evolve and change. Service through missions has always played a vital role in who we are as disciples of Christ.

Our pastor plays a crucial part in the life of our church. We are seeking someone who will guide our congregation as we strive to fulfill our Mission Statement. In addition to strong preaching and teaching abilities, our pastor should have the vision to guide us as we continue to aspire to be a true body of Christ. Through preaching and teaching, the pastor will help us to continue to mature in our discipleship. Our pastor should demonstrate an appropriate balance between long-term and short-term vision. A forward-thinking mindset will enable our pastor to inspire and motivate us to increase our presence as a vital and welcoming body of believers that better reflects our community’s growing diversity.

Our church mission study recognizes the need to improve our communication and social media presence, and we are seeking someone with ideas and the knowledge to help facilitate this goal. In addition, having strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate us in the life of our church would be important. Our mission study also revealed a significant concern about our music ministry. Our pastor will need to collaborate with our music director to improve music selection and presentation to better suit the wishes of our congregation and attract those in our changing community.

Lastly, though not required, our congregation would prefer to have a young pastor with a family. This could encourage the growth of our church by hopefully adding other young families.

Our congregation seeks a pastor who, actively seeking God’s guidance, preaches theologically sound and insightful sermons that guide us in these challenging times and inspire us to turn outward to serve others in Jesus’ name. His or her sermons should be delivered in a manner that comes naturally without direct reading of the entire sermon.

Compassion, pastoral care, interpersonal skills, and a sense of humor are also important. The person we call will need to be approachable, patient, and supportive; someone who will encourage us in illness and adversity, particularly since we have many older members in our church.

Our congregation comes from different backgrounds and denominations. Therefore, our pastor needs to promote cooperation among all as common ground and as God’s will is sought. As a bridge-builder, our pastor would help to create a safe and comfortable environment for the expression of differing views. He or she would encourage our members to serve and would lead with confidence, in accordance with their God-given spiritual gifts.

IC_Residency_Job_Description_1_.pdf

Announcing a new position in the Inclusive Collective (IC) ecosystem. We are launching a Campus Ministry Residency at the IC at Northern IL University (1.5 hours from Chicago). We are looking for a promising young leader (clergy or laity) interested in an opportunity to practice ministry in a Jesus-loving, LGBTQ-inclusive, and anti-racist growing ministry. This person does NOT need to be a polished leader, but they should be a natural networker and exhibit excitement for innovation. It is a PT position, but the package is pretty good. Know anyone? Mature recent college grads excited about collegiate ministry, recent seminary grads and current students exploring campus ministry, lay people with ministry gifts - please think in all of these categories and others! If you do know anyone, please:

More context: In 2019, the Northern IL Conference of the UMC asked the IC - Chicago to take on a new project and support the Conference's campus ministry at Northern IL University. It became the IC at NIU and our intrepid former Student Pastor, Kaitlyn Frantz, went there to start reviving the campus ministry. Growth has occurred in many ways over the last two years (despite 1.5 years of Covid!). Kaitlyn is leaving to move closer to family in Texas, and we are shifting to a residency model for the next stage of this ministry. The IC at NIU is a separate legal/financial entity from the IC in Chicago -- essentially a franchise -- but this person would work closely with the Executive Director and our IC - Chicago team.
