Program & Youth Director - Detroit, MI
Listed: 03-09-2022
Employer: Camp Westminster // Westminster Church of Detroit - 17567 Hubbell Ave. Detroit, MI 48235 | (313) 341-8969 | campwestminster.com
Location: Detroit, MI
Type: Full-time
Download: Job Description - Program & Youth Director
Camp Westminster on Higgins Lake (CW) is a camp and retreat center located in central northern Michigan with administrative offices at Westminster Church of Detroit. Each summer, we welcome campers from around the state to week-long sessions where they are invited to discover God, themselves, and their community. We believe that God meets us in the wilderness. By providing experiences that pair welcome and acceptance with challenge, we create the perfect environment for God to move in the lives of everyone who sets foot on camp.
Westminster Church of Detroit (WCOD) is a majority black congregation located in Northwestern Detroit in the Winship neighborhood. Like camp, WCOD has a long history in the city and has been at its current location for about the last 50 years. We are a church for all people!
About this Position
This is a new position that will serve both the outdoor ministry at Camp Westminster and the children and youth of Westminster Church. CW needs a program director who can champion continual learning in program development, developing creative opportunities for campers to discover God, themselves, and their community. We do not expect an instant explosion of people and programs, rather sustained growth in program quality and engagement over time.
We are excited that this position will bridge the youth programs of Westminster Church of Detroit and Camp Westminster. This is an opportunity for camps programs to extend year- round and for the church's programs to continue throughout the summer. We expect creative solutions, embracing constructive/well-thought-out risk, and programs that don't look like how they did 10 or 20 years ago.
The ideal candidate will have a deep faith in Jesus Christ, be comfortable with the values and practices of the Presbyterian Church (USA), have experience in camping, and fully embrace working in a church setting. In addition, they will be able to articulate an antiracist vision for youth ministry in both camp and church settings. This person must love engaging youth and their families in the fullness of human diversity expressed in race, class, ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
The Program & Youth Director will shift the focus of their energy during the year. They will spend the summer season and ramp-up working on camp programing, shifting to the church after the summer program season has concluded. That focus will shift progressively through the year, focusing on camp entirely again as the summer approaches. As we learn to live into this shared role, the Program & Youth Director should expect an approximately 70/30 split between camp and church programs. Ultimately camp and church programs will merge, sharing the same objectives, practices, and traditions.
Relationships
This position will be supervised by the Executive Director of Camp Westminster and the Pastor of Westminster Church of Detroit. They will be evaluated based on this position description, measured program quality, contribution to their programs' growth trajectory, and mutually established professional development goals.
Responsibilities
In both camp and church contexts:
Be an architect of culture, creating community founded in compassion, radical welcome, justice, equity, and liberation;
Implement any programs in a way that centers healthy relationships. The program & youth director will foster authentic relationships with youth and give youth the tools to form healthy relationships with each other;
Work alongside camp and church communities in adopting antiracist practices and policies, rooting out white supremacy practices, and striving toward the liberation of all people;
Work collaboratively with colleagues to accomplish the shared mission of church and camp, taking on other duties as necessary.
At Camp Westminster, this looks like:
Shaping the summer program through continual improvement, aligned with camp’s purpose, values and mission;
Help to promote summer programs, engaging camper families and organizational partners;
Recruit and hire summer program and support staff;
Day-to-day implementation of summer programs including supervision and evaluation of summer program staff and volunteers;
Evaluate summer programs;
Explore new program models in the tradition of Camp Westminster for year-round and summer implementation.
At Westminster Church of Detroit, this looks like:
Lead children and youth pastoral care and outreach;
Spiritual formation education for children and youth;
Plan and implement events for youth in the congregation;
Organize volunteers in the congregation to support the youth program.

Senior Pastor/Head of Staff - Hickory, NC
Listed: 02-28-2022
Employer: First Presbyterian Church of Hickory - 237 2nd St. NW, Hickory, NC 28601 | (828) 322-6343 | http://hickoryfpc.org/
Location: Hickory, NC
Type: Full-time
Download: Job Description - Head of Staff
1. How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Our next pastor comes at a time of great opportunity as our church looks to embrace dynamic change while respecting our traditions, balance competing desires for worship services, connect with all generations, and help us reach out to members (and future members). We seek an energetic person who can share our current vision and help us focus that vision! This would include offering inspiring sermons that will motivate us to serve God’s will in our community (and the world), attracting younger members (and neighbors), and helping us innovate while respecting our heritage.
Our pastor will help us grow by equipping us to reach out to those not currently part of a Christian community. We will continue to offer ourselves in faithful, lov- ing service to God and to all people. Together, we will look to deepen our faith and discipleship through selfless service, worship, study, prayer, innovation, enthusiasm, and love.
We seek a pastor who can help us continue to be a beacon in a darkened world. This will be accomplished by affirming an inclusive faith community rooted in our Presbyterian beliefs and biblical understanding while learning and growing spirit- ually in lifelong discipleship. Our pastor will help further develop our church’s cul- ture of generosity. Our culture is established through fellowship opportunities that result in transformational relationships.
(Our new pastor must also get comfortable saying “sesquicentennial.”)
2. Describe the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization.
Like most churches, we’re seeking a unicorn. We would accept a workhorse, but we’re hoping for a Thoroughbred.
We seek:
• an energetic pastor whose sermons inspire us and make us excited about coming to church, then resonate with us as we go into the world;
• a spiritual leader who helps us grow in faith and in number;
• a “people person” able to connect with every age group, listen carefully, and express opinions honestly with compassion for others;
• someone flexible enough to adapt when necessary, demonstrating diplomacy, self-awareness, and a good humor;
• an open-minded minister willing to engage in diverse dialogue without judg- ment, actively involved in the lives of individual members and the larger com- munity.
This person motivates and challenges others with new ideas, shepherding from the pulpit and through action.
As Head of Staff, our minister will need to further our church vision, collaborate with staff to maximize their talents, serve as an effective motivator, show the courage to recognize new opportunities, make changes where needed, and lead us in a sustainable future. The same qualities apply to working with our larger community, because our pastor should always lean toward collaboration.
We want a pastor who will honor the trust and credibility our church has earned over our 149-year heritage as we embrace our dreams and aspirations of the future. We hope that our next minister feels God’s call to join our church family and is excited by that call!
3. For what specific tasks, assignments, and programs areas will this person have responsibility?
FPC Hickory seeks a lead pastor with a deep passion for the Lord and for the Bible, a personal ministry, and doctrinal views consistent with those of the Pres- byterian Church (USA). The lead pastor, as a minister of the Gospel, shall be devoted to the service of Christ and the church, preaching and teaching the Word of God, administering the sacraments, and faithfully devoted to pastoral work.
The lead pastor will:
preach at most worship services;
lead the congregation in worship;
lead the church to discern God’s vision;
work with the Session;
lead in the Presbytery;
supervise our staff’s spiritual and ministry development;
provide pastoral care for the congregation; and
partner with lay leadership to direct church ministries.
Despite the attendance challenges many churches currently face, FPC Hickory wants the new lead pastor to help grow our congregation.
We encourage our next pastor to be part of the Hickory Area Ministers to connect with fellow religious leaders across denominational and racial lines to make a large and positive impact on the community. HAM sponsors many important events in Hickory, including the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. service, Wednesday Lenten services, a Good Friday community service, and Thanksgiving service. Other opportunities for involvement include the Racial Justice and Reconciliation Discussion Group and the Greater Hickory Interfaith Council.

Solo Pastor - Tarrytown, NY
Listed: 02-16-2022
Employer: Union Church of Pocantico Hills - 555 Bedford Road, Tarrytown, NY 10591 | (914) 631-2069 | www.ucph.org
Location: Tarrytown, NY
Type: Full-time
Download: Job Description - Solo Pastor
1. How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
The church’s recent Mission Review (available at http://ucph.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/UCPH- Mission-Report-FINAL.pdf) indicated that our congregation’s top priorities are (1) to attract families with children and youth, (2) to develop a comprehensive strategy to reach new people and (3) to provide opportunities for Christian service, education and spiritual formation at every age and stage of life. Most churches also rank these three priorities highly. Union Church differed from most other churches, however, in also prioritizing relatively highly two other objectives: (4) to expand outreach ministries that provide direct services to those living on the margins of society; and (5) to work as for social and institutional change so that society might better reflect the values of the kingdom of God. Taken together, these goals present an ambitious agenda for our relatively small and aging congregation. We will need to rally our collective energy, vision and resources and to challenge our comfort and satisfaction with familiar ways of doing things.
The committee believes that the selection of the right minister is essential for the church to achieve its goals. The pastor of this congregation is the glue that binds us together, the preacher and teacher who inspires us, the leader and entrepreneur who challenges us to step beyond our comfort zones and to develop new outlets for our Christian witness. While he or she can expect enthusiastic support from church leadership and the congregation at large, these aspirations cannot be achieved without the expertise, dedication and enthusiasm of the person essential to our future, the next pastor of Union Church.
2. Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization.
We seek a spiritually mature, compassionate and dynamic leader with demonstrated achievement in preaching and worship leadership in a church setting. The successful candidate will be a self- motivated task manager with organizational agility and the financial expertise required to oversee the business side of the church including coordination with Historic Hudson Valley, owner of the church properties. He or she should be comfortable helping us to augment our financial stewardship in order to build the financial foundations of the church. Union Church’s pastor is an important steward of continuity, providing guidance, education, inspiration, and supervision in the daily life of the church. At the same time, we hope for a pastor who has a heart for mission, a willingness to engage with the life of our community beyond the church, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Strategy and vision are essential for the church to achieve its outreach goals as are talents needed to communicate across various platforms and social media. Our pastor will be sought as an advisor both to church leadership and to congregants needing spiritual direction and comfort. Flexibility and collaboration will be most valuable in achieving success in this position. Position Description:
First Presbyterian Church PC(USA) in Bloomington, Indiana is hiring HEAD OF STAFF. We are a healthy congregation of seekers and disciples of Christ, located in the heart of beautiful southern Indiana and in the home community of Indiana University. We are committed to offering full hospitality for all God’s children. We follow the example of Christ through acts of compassion and by seeking God’s reconciling peace, freedom and justice. We seek a Head of Staff who will work collaboratively with the ministry team and others, equipping us with renewed strength in our faith and confidence in our missions. We welcome interest from all candidates, including those with diverse background, ethnicity and lived experiences.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization:
We are committed to the movement of the Spirit. There are a variety of gifts that a strong candidate brings including those of lived experiences. Spanish or Korean language skills, for example, would promote future outreach in Bloomington’s changing demographic environment, and Spanish also would enhance our existing Nicaraguan mission. Other experiences likewise might help FPC respond to the everchanging call of God. We seek a partner in our ministry who will challenge and support us as we look to move forward in new ways through the Matthew 25 Initiative.
Members of FPC listen to sermons. An accomplished preacher with a solid understanding of scriptural context who allows for the movement of the Spirit to speak through the sermons permits our congregation to continue to find comfort in the Word when needed but also find challenge to grow. A head of staff facilitates the development of post pandemic worship opportunities through both in-person and technology-supported experiences.
A pastor joining us in our ministry understands the vital role of acting as a ministry team. They have a close working relationship with all staff and view an associate pastor as an equal colleague. They understand the importance of clear communication with staff, leadership, and the congregation at large and are actively engaged across all areas of FPC’s ministry programs. They work with the ministry team to delegate responsibilities and grow leadership within the congregation.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The pastor will have primary responsibility for leading our congregation as we celebrate Christ and serve our community. Guided by the Spirit, our pastor will enable members’ gifts and challenge the congregation in the spirit of the Matthew 25 initiative to assess existing programs and initiate new ventures.
The pastor will serve as head of staff and administrative leader for the congregation, while empowering the gifts of a ministry team through communication and regular staff meetings. Strong administrative and collaborative skills are important.
The pastor will attend to the congregation’s spiritual development through preaching, teaching, and prayer, leading the Session’s spiritual growth, and caring for the congregation through counseling, sensitive listening, and visitation. In addition to these spiritual and pastoral care tasks, the specific committee liaison roles will be negotiated with the associate pastor. Previously, the pastor’s primary assignments included collaborative work with worship, stewardship, property, membership, and personnel committees.
We expect the pastor’s duties will include leading worship services and administering the sacraments, conducting weddings and funerals, and serving as moderator of the session and congregation. There will also be opportunities for interfaith and denominational involvement.
