Solo Pastor - Hillsboro, TX
Listed: 07-05-2022

Location: Hillsboro, TX
Type: Full-time
Download: Job Description - Solo Pastor
1. How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
A minister called to FPC Hillsboro must give attention to helping our congregation identify and meet its mission priority. To this end, he/she must be willing to meet with internal committees on a regular basis to explore ways to address needs both within our church and the community our church serves. Of particular importance is to actively interface with community organizations in order to familiarize him/herself with organizational priorities. Along with church members, this interaction would serve as a means to represent our church as a vital change agent and inspire the congregation to tackle projects it perhaps had not considered in the past.
Also, of importance is a leader to help guide the congregation in offering educational and social activities for members of all ages, but particularly children and youth in our church. The demographics of our current congregation suggest that we are homogeneous in age and ethnicity and somewhat insular so that we do not reflect the demographics of the community in which we are situated. We are aware that there are many in our service area who would benefit from a closer connection to a church and to the Word of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we want to reach out to others as part of our mission orientation.
2. Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization:
Our congregation is seeking an individual who has a firm foundation in the Scriptures and looks to the Scriptures as a foundation for sermons and educational endeavors. We especially value thought-provoking messages that speak to a multigenerational audience and that remain in the forefront of our thoughts throughout the weeks that follow. In addition, we seek an individual who can direct members to resources that will help accomplish responsibilities and meet personal needs.
FPC also seeks an individual who builds relationships of trust and respect with individuals and entities both within an outside the church. As one of the most visible “faces” of our church in our service area, the minister must be viewed as a friendly, warm, and accepting individual with the ability to foster open dialogue and collaboration. Whenever called upon to speak to groups, he/she will be expected to communicate effectively in a way that helps others to recognize shared concerns and achieve common goals.
In addition, the minister must be creative in thinking about how our church might use innovative approaches to accomplishing its mission and inspire members to take on challenges that glorify Christ and furthers His message of salvation through Him to others.
3. What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
Our church is seeking a minister who can inspire us to take on challenges for accomplishing our mission, while respecting our history and local culture. We desire a minister who is steeped in the Scriptures and reformed theology and can provide thought-provoking sermons that encourage us to reflect on our personal and churchwide spiritual development and relationship with others.
Additionally, we seek a minister who is knowledgeable of successful endeavors elsewhere that might be adapted to our particular context to help us formulate innovative ways to carry out our mission. We desire a minister who will seek and develop partnerships with entities outside our church that have goals consistent with Christ’s calling. In addition, we are seeking a minister who will be responsive to the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of individual members of our congregation and will be attentive in terms of presence and prayer for specific needs.
Like any entity, organizational skills, written and verbal communication, adaptability, and time management are important factors in helping a church function. We seek a minister who can apply technology skills that broaden communication and awareness of activities and services our church offers. Our church also seeks a minister who fosters productive meetings, demonstrates time-management skills, and seeks counsel with the Session, in order for those within the congregation to fulfill our mission.

1. How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
We are excited to think that this position will help us continue to meet our vision and mission goal of reaching more people within the congregation as well as out in the community. A fresh approach in worship might encourage the younger audience to return to Sunday services. We look forward to having a pastor that has novel ideas and enthusiasm and is willing to explore new avenues of worship.
More importantly we seek a pastor who would be a facilitator – making sure that those who hold offices in the church (anything from Elders to Sunday School teachers) get adequate training which can lead to success in reaching all of God’s children. Another job of the facilitator would be to help keep us in the know about opportunities to engage in worship with other Presbyterians - of all ages - from all across the state and region at various events such as retreats, youth camps and Christian concerts to enrich our spiritual lives.
2. Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization:
First of all, we are looking for someone who is interested in knowing us – and who is willing to build relationships with members and non-members alike. We want this person to be community-minded, realizing that this is a fundamental characteristic to lend leadership to a successful small town. In addition, we want those relationships to be strong between other denominations so that when we need to lean on each other or worship together, we all will be there to fortify and assist each other’s work.
Secondly, we are looking for someone who appreciates the power of communication and how integral it is not only for making individual people feel valued and needed, but also how vital it is for building a solid church family where everyone is included. Active listening, reaching out and hearing all voices and opinions regardless of age or gender, leads to building solid relationships and keeps us all on the same page.
Finally, we want someone who is dynamic – unafraid of challenging our congregation with new ideas while at the same time giving sermons that help us think critically and relate to today’s world. Additionally, we are looking for someone with strategy and vision to enhance our church and carry it into the future. And like every congregation, we pray for a pastor who is patient, kind, loving, compassionate, inclusive and enthusiastic while simultaneously making decisions to guide the direction of our church.
3. What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
Leading a church brings a variety of tasks and assignments that help to inform, lead and comfort a congregation and even an entire community. Various obligations include:
1. Weekly Sunday service
2. Maintain regular church office hours – is readily available to attend to and answer congregational needs.
3. Home visits to the elderly, sick, or grieving congregants and their families offering comfort and support.
4. Once a month Sunday services for Assisted Living and Good Samaritan Nursing Home
5. Joint Easter services with the Methodist Church (Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday)
6. Ecumenical Services – (Palm Sunday Pilgrimage, Good Friday service, Sunday Thanksgiving service, and Unity Week service.)
7. Weddings, baptisms, Funerals
8. Facilitating training for every office in the church such as Sunday School teacher, elders, deacons, etc.
9. Teaching New Member Classes, Bible Study Classes, Confirmation Classes
10. Moderating Session meetings
11. Family Consulting
12. Youth group leadership

• In addition to the Minister position, paid staff includes a full-time Minister of Music, a Business Manager and a Director of Family Ministries (currently vacant).

Covid 19 and its sub-variants have made worship and in-person gatherings challenging in ways we could not have anticipated. However, for the time being, we are conducting in-person worships, with some church meetings taking place on Zoom. Mask-wearing while singing will continue until such time as it is deemed safe to unmask by the Wisconsin Council of Churches or our Session. Any candidate should be willing to abide by these conditions.
Presently, our Session/Board of Deacons includes five members who are gifted preachers, and as such, these rotate in the pulpit on Sundays when the Pastor is away.
Salary (compensation) to be based on experience and talents, and will meet or exceed the minimum requirements as set forth by the Presbytery of Milwaukee, including benefits, vacation, continuing education time, and continuing education and professional expenses.
