The information below is intended to help candidates discern whether God is calling them to serve our church.
Our Mission Statement:
We are Christ’s followers, moved by the Spirit, to God’s service. As members of the body of Christ, we carry on faithfully the ministry of Jesus. Since we encounter God in each person, we are committed to treating others with trust, love, care, and respect. We are joyfully partnering with God to reimagine, adapt, and re-energize our church and its impact on our community while maintaining a sense of tradition and respect for our history.
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
HPPC, a historic church currently celebrating its 150th anniversary year, is located on the North Shore of suburban Chicago in the lakefront community of Highland Park, IL. Our congregation includes multi-generational families and inter-faith couples, and enjoys an amazingly rich and vibrant music ministry. Many church members are active in civic organizations within our community of 30,000.
Our vision for ministry is to promote growth and revitalization within our congregation and be more active in our community by:
Continuing a meaningful and engaging worship environment where all generations have opportunities to learn and grow and participate in Christian faith, and where those from other religious and social backgrounds feel comfortable and welcome to participate in our community of faith
Seeking to embrace and build upon our youth and adult education programs to foster connections within the congregation and community
Leading community outreach by actively supporting and expanding local mission initiatives such as PADS (homeless shelter) and Rebuilding Together (home repair) through gifts of time, energy and financial support
How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?
Based on feedback from a recent congregational survey, we developed and are implementing a strategic plan to expand the spiritual vitality, leadership and ministry of our congregation. It embraces clear goals, milestones and steps for execution. One focus is to acquire ways to foster participation within our congregation, as well as to strengthen our relationship with the surrounding community. Social and demographic changes demand we rethink our approach and find new ways to share God’s love. We expect change as we broaden our outreach.
We also recognize the future need to revisit our church’s mission statement to better understand and articulate our core purposes. Focusing on inclusivity and service, we have much to offer our multi-faith, multi-cultural community, and we seek to increase visibility of God’s work performed through HPPC members. We plan to meet new people where they are, through activities designed to engage those who may not currently have a church home. Bolstering our interfaith relationships within our local community will remain a priority.
We continue involvement with and support for our existing mission initiatives with over a dozen local service organizations. Our church building provides meeting space for several community and social service groups. Several times we have opened our church to accommodate fledgling congregations. Our annual rummage sale generates interaction with the community and serves as a source of affordable clothing and supplies.
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
We will look to our pastor to lead and teach us to strengthen our Christian faith and use our gifts for successful implementation of our strategic plan. Our pastor should inspire members to contribute their talents, treasure and energy, reminding us that those contributions are for the sake of doing God’s work in the world.
We would like the pastor to identify and invite members to participate in leadership roles and activities that they may not have previously sought out. The pastor’s teachings should nourish and inspire the congregation to share God’s love outside our walls.
Our pastor should help Session execute current plans and identify any organizational weaknesses or opportunities for improvement. We welcome new ideas and tools to enhance the vitality of our congregation. We want to ensure we are up to date technologically and are utilizing all methods of community outreach including social media.
We want our lay leaders to be more knowledgeable in Presbyterian polity and to take increased leadership responsibilities. S/he should oversee this education and encourage lay leadership to utilize available training resources annually, particularly as new elders and deacons are installed.
By reinvigorating our congregation in spirit and participation, our new pastor will enable us to better share Christ’s teachings with our community and become more connected as a congregation.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization.
The person called to ministry for Highland Park Presbyterian Church should:
Be passionate about working with a small to mid-sized congregation seeking to minister to our congregation and our community as a whole

Called to Lives of Meaning and Purpose – Evaluation Research
The strategy:
Having learned from the quantitative survey and a series of photovoice focus groups, this phase of our research is aimed at strategically assessing the primary types of interventions undertaken by the congregations involved in this Initiative. That is, the task for each researcher will be to focus on one or more types of activities a given congregation undertook. An intervention will be defined by us based on what kind of social interaction and communication was employed in pursuing their goals. Did they have classes, preach sermons, organize community projects, etc.? We will be interested in whether and how each of these types of activities was experienced by participants as a strategy for fostering a deeper sense of meaning and purpose or calling them to new imaginations of church and faithful living.
The big questions:
We are designing this research to include stories from people in a variety of different settings where similar interventions took place – different religious traditions, churches large and small, etc. Among the things we will look for in each case will be: What theological grounding was critical and what new theological insight emerged? What forms of discovery and decision-making were employed as the congregation developed its approach? And what resources (including relationships and collaborations) have made their work possible? We will work with you to develop research strategies for finding the answers to these questions.
The timeline:
Depending on the situation in each Hub, we hope to begin some pilot work as early as October, but the majority of the work will take place between December and May. We hope that a good portion of this work will be on-site, but where conditions dictate, virtual observation and interviewing will likely be included. The balance of in-person and virtual will depend on your local conditions. And that, in turn, will affect the timeline for undertaking and completing the work.
The research activities:
In each congregation, there will be work aimed at a (1) general cultural orientation to the congregation. That is, we will want (a) an interview with a pastoral leader and (b) one or more observations of the primary worship service. We will also encourage (c) the gathering of a focus group that includes both people who have been involved in the intervention(s) and others in the congregation. These efforts will be aimed at assessing the overall impact of the Initiative on the congregation. (2) In addition, to the extent possible, we will hope to include one or more observations of the intervention in action (adults studying, volunteers serving, and the like). And (3) for each type of intervention, we will hope to target 3-5 interviews with people who have been involved.
Expectations:
While we hope that you bring some previous qualitative research to this work, we will provide training and work with you throughout the project. If conditions permit, we may visit with you in the field. You will be expected to provide fieldnotes of your observations and recordings of your interviews. As materials come to us, they will be transcribed by us and entered into the project database.
For questions or information requests, please send your queries to Rev. Antonia Ruth Coleman, MDiv. at acoleman@mccormick.edu.

Solo pastor - Leander, TX
Listed: 09-09-2021
Employer: LiveOak Church - 1195 Sonny Drive, Leander, TX 78641 | (512) 775-5714 | www.liveoak-church.org
Location: Leander, TX
Type: Full-time
Download: Job Description - Solo pastor
LiveOak Church, a PCUSA congregation in Leander, Texas, seeks to call a new pastor. We are a small church in a fast-growing suburb of Austin, and we are looking for a compassionate and spiritually mature leader who is dedicated to following Jesus Christ, has five or more years of experience in pastoral work, and excels in the following areas: engaging preaching, promoting spiritual growth, a vision for outreach, strong interpersonal relationships, staff development, and a collaborative leadership style. Interested candidates can find more details about our church and the position on the church’s website at www.liveoak-church.org/transition or by accessing our Ministry Information Form (MIF) through the denomination’s Church Leadership Connection (CLC). Personal referrals may be sent via CLC or directly by e-mail to the LiveOak Pastor Nominating Committee at liveoakpnc@gmail.com.
Mission Statement:
What is your congregation's or organization's Mission Statement?
LiveOak's mission is to create a place where every person is welcome to experience the love of God, to foster an atmosphere of grace where we can build the faithful in discipleship while recognizing that nobody is perfect, and to equip our church to live as if anything is possible with God by encouraging our church family to serve God through their unique calling.
Narrative Questions:
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Our next pastor will, we hope, bring much-needed leadership to our church and re-energize our congregation. Due to the pandemic-induced pause in certain ministries and to the current interim period between pastors, we believe our congregation has lost momentum and become somewhat complacent. We wonder if all those who regularly attended prior to the pandemic will return. In order to resume high-quality ministry to the families in our church, we need direction. In order to reach new families in our community, we need energy, and, for us, a key driver of that energy comes from having an engaging preacher who gets us excited about following Jesus, being together, and reaching out to those around us. Moreover, based on our recent mission study survey, the congregation is plainly asking for edifying and engaging preaching. We also need leadership for our young staff. They are eager to serve and innovate, and they would benefit from more support and guidance. Despite being part-time, they are integral to important ministries, especially those for our teens and children. Finally, we need a pastor to lead us to a place where we are practicing faithful stewardship to ensure that the church has the resources required to fulfill its mission. Leander and other nearby towns are growing quickly, and opportunities abound. We believe LiveOak is called to fulfill a vital role in furthering the kingdom of God in our area, and we will support a pastor who can lead us in this calling.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and/or organization.
LiveOak needs a pastor who energetically engages the congregation with biblical teaching and preaching and has a passion for connecting to people right where they are in their lives. LiveOak would also benefit from a visionary who has the ability to inspire people to give of their money, time, and talents for the good of the gospel and for the glory of Jesus Christ. We have incredible opportunities for growth between the creativity of our members, resources such as the 10 acres of land that we own, and a rapidly growing city. We hope to find someone who is a good steward of these resources and has the ability to put vision into action. Our church also has a commitment to spiritual growth as well as reaching our community and to have a pastor with the same commitments would serve us well.
Based on our mission study results, interpersonal engagement, inspiring preaching and effective communication were the clearest requests of our congregation, staff.· and session. Having the ability to connect to people and to connect people to one another is incredibly important for this role.
For what specific tasks, assignments, and programs areas will this person have responsibility?
The pastor will have oversight of preaching and Bible studies. pastoral care, and staff development. They will also work with the staff and session to set the overall strategy , vision, and mission of the church. The pastor will be responsible for pastoral care including visiting families in need, hospital visitations of our congregation, and performing weddings and funerals as requested. The pastor will work with the session and staff to enhance and support established ministries including the youth and children's programs. Bible studies, and mission and outreach initiatives. The pastor will also identify potential ministries for LiveOak.

Transitional Team Ministry Concept - Grosse Pointe Woods, MI
Listed: 09-04-2021
Employer: Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church - 19950 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe, MI 48236 | (313) 886-4301 | http://www.gpwpres.org/GPWPC/Home.html
Location: Grosse Pointe, MI
Type: Part-time
Download: Job Description - Transitional Team Ministry Concept
Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church (GPWPC) is seeking a part time Minister for a transitional period. Based on interviews and discussions to date the position is an opportunity for a forthcoming Reverend who is yet to be ordained and therefore does not have all the qualifications necessary for all aspects of the position if such person is guided by an experience Pastor.
As a result GPWPC developed a team approach which provides an opportunity for experienced Pastors who wish to continue in ministry in a focused or limited extent and for those Pastors who are yet to be ordained and would benefit from a mentoring relationship. The requirements of the position would be divided into two components. The exact allocation of responsibilities would be based on the needs of the two Pastors as well as the needs of the church. Flexibility in structuring the duties and time requirements of the positions to meet the needs of all concerned is a key part of this approach.
The general concept is that one component might be called a “Mentoring Pastor”. This position would be responsible for Moderating Session, preaching approximately once per month (twice per month if 5 Sundays in the month), performing Sacraments (if required on the Sundays when preaching), and coaching a yet to be ordained part time Temporary Supply Pastor. The hours to be worked as well as the compensation would be developed consistent with the objective of permitting a qualified candidate to contribute to the Church while enjoying flexibility and the fruits of a well spent life. The mentoring aspect of the position would also provide the opportunity to contribute to the development an up and coming Pastor.
The second component is the Part Time Temporary Supply Pastor or Pastor Mentee. This Pastor would attend Session Meetings, attend various committee meetings as required, preach 3 Sundays per month, and perform other duties as described in the attached job description (except for any duties to be performed by the Mentoring Pastor). The Part Time Temporary Supply Pastor would seek guidance and direction as needed from the Mentoring Pastor. Hours to be worked as well as compensation would be developed consistent with the duties and time requirement of the position. One might think of the Transitional Team as an Internship for aspiring Pastors.
Note on GPWPC Community Outreach:
GPWPC has been renting substantial unused space in its building to charitable organizations such as Caught Up which mentors and counsels “at risk” teenage men from the eastside of Detroit, Detroit Made which mentors and trains aspiring teen athletes from the east side, and Sister Judies Outreach which provides and delivers food to needy Detroit residents in the Detroit Farmers Market area, and others. We believe providing safe, attractive, and affordable space to charitable organizations is a major part of our mission and view these organizations as our partners in Mission. Supporting and growing our outreach to the community beyond Grosse Pointe with these partners is an important role of the Team Ministry and we are looking for Pastors who share this vision.
