What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

Founded in 1993, LPC is a congregation which through worship, education, social witness, and mission seeks to embody the love and grace of God, seen most clearly in Jesus Christ. Worship is central, with a high priority placed on excellence in preaching and music. While the service is traditional, with a sanctuary choir and a bell choir, we also use other instruments occasionally.  In worship we are inspired, challenged, and nourished to hear God’s Word and to live out our faith during the week through fellowship, faith formation and mission. We offer fellowship after each service to help visitors and existing members connect and sponsor monthly dinners and dine around groups.

Discipleship grounded in better knowledge of Scripture is a priority. Four years ago, LPC became an Earth Care congregation, with a team seeking to help us be better stewards of God’s creation. All connected to LPC are encouraged to engage with others and to put their gifts and energy to work within the Church and in the community and the world.

We envision expanding faith formation, social witness, and mission in person and through expanded technology. Since the pandemic, we have experienced a resurgence of dedication to these areas. Live streaming services and technology have offered new pathways to reach our congregation and others. We hope to continue to expand these capabilities. Our new and modernized audio-visual system will provide more opportunities in the future.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

It will:

  • Provide leadership and support for our efforts in faith formation, social witness and environmental justice.

  • Help identify and support the church’s involvement in ecumenical activities with other congregations and service to our community and beyond.

  • Share in providing pastoral care and counseling to our members.

  • Offer another fresh voice and perspective for preaching the Gospel and leading worship.

  • Continue to work with the congregation on reaching out to people of all ages to share the love of Christ.

  • Expand the use of social media and technology in an innovative way as we seek to bring “meaning and hope to all by the way we worship, serve, and live”.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

  • Disciple of Jesus Christ whose heart’s desire is to share the love and grace of God

  • A person who is continually guided and taught by God’s Word and Scripture

  • Open to the movement of the Holy Spirit

  • Possesses a winsome and maturing faith

  • Person of prayer

  • Flexible and adaptable

  • Compassionate, approachable, able to work with people of all ages

  • Self-starter

  • Good sense of humor, empathy and resilience

  • Desire to learn

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

  • Strengthen and expand LPC’s faith formation ministry to build disciples of all ages

  • Work collaboratively with ministry teams to develop new ways to reach out to multiple age groups

  • Help develop creative use of on-line and live stream technologies to widen the breadth and depth of LPC’s outreach

  • Participate regularly in worship and preaching

  • Assist with pastoral care

  • Lead Social Witness team to further efforts to educate the congregation and the community on working to bring change on issues affecting “the least of these”

  • Equip members to participate and lead ministries

  • Teach and assist with programs and ministries as needed

  • Work collaboratively with Senior Pastor to embody the mission/vision of the church

  • Additional duties and tasks as assigned by Senior Pastor

  • A staff that models collaborative leadership.

  • A Session that governs with a focus on growing disciples.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

The person filling this position will be expected to guide the congregation and staff principally in the areas of outreach and mission. The associate pastor for mission and outreach will be responsible for stewarding and growing two important areas of our vision: living as an inclusive community of faith within the Reformed tradition of head, heart and hands, and outreach that makes a significant difference in the community, the world, and the lives of our members. The associate pastor will recruit and equip members to serve in outreach ministries, engage with other area faith communities in community mission, strengthen existing partnerships, and initiate new ones with local and global agencies that work to relieve suffering, support the Outreach Committee and Discipleship Committee, and help our congregation discern where God is calling us to further our outreach ministries and work to implement that call. We are a Matthew 25 Hunger Action Congregation and an Earth Care Congregation of the PC(USA), and the associate pastor will help us to live out the priorities of those commitments: building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism, eradicating poverty, and restoring and stewarding God’s creation.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

First Presbyterian is seeking a person with a compassionate heart, spiritual maturity, excellent communication skills (including personal, group, social media) and a passion for caring for and helping those most vulnerable. We seek a person who collaborates within the church and seeks to build relationships with other churches and agencies to do the utmost good by using all resources (people, funds, etc.) to further the stated and yet to be established goals. We hope for a candidate who is willing to think ‘outside the box’ to energize our congregation with new and innovative opportunities, while being creative and excited about the work being done.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The associate pastor for outreach will have the primary responsibility for spiritual and operational leadership in the areas of outreach and mission. He or she will also be a part of the pastoral team. More specific responsibilities will be the following:

  • Lead and direct all mission and outreach initiatives and programs for the church, including those related to Matthew 25 and Earth Care Team.

  • Initiate and lead programming to address the reduction of poverty and racism in the community.

  • Assist in building congregational vitality in collaboration with the Discipleship Associate and Discipleship Committee.

  • Be the staff person assigned to the Outreach Committee and the Discipleship Committee.

  • Reach out to and collaborate with other faith communities and area agencies on shared initiatives to address the stated needs.

The associate pastor will also contribute to overall pastoral responsibilities by participating in worship regularly, preaching as needed, making pastoral visits, taking pastoral call, presiding at weddings and funerals as needed, and participating regularly in the teaching ministries of First Presbyterian Church.

Head Pastor, First Presbyterian Church of Homer, First Presbyterian Church of Concord, Michigan, Homer, MI and Concord, MI

Listed: 09-26-22

Employer: First Presbyterian Church of Homer, First Presbyterian Church of Concord, Michigan | (517) 568-4852

Location: Homer, MI and Concord, MI

Website: www.homerfpc.com

Facebook: First Presbyterian Church of Homer First Presbyterian Church of Concord

Contact: Hope Anderson

The yoked congregations of Homer and Concord, Michigan, seek a head pastor for our two historic, rural congregations.

This is a dynamic and exciting time for the congregations of Concord and Homer! Jesus Christ and His Good News compels us in the midst of the pandemic to find new ways to make strong connections within our congregations and within our communities! We seek a pastor who will be instrumental in supporting and, at times, coordinating these efforts. Both churches offer a women’s group; the Homer church also has a men’s group which meets monthly for a Saturday breakfast and devotional time. Both congregations are involved with their community’s thrift stores and food banks. Both congregations offer free funeral dinner services to anyone in need, including non-members. The Concord congregation is blessed with several nurse practitioners and other medical professionals and offers several health programs at the church as well as the local school. Both congregations have a love for music in worship; the Concord church recently purchased a new grand piano, and the Homer church has many musical groups open to all; a choral choir, a bell choir, and a brass group. Both churches also have a love for good food-based fellowship. The Concord church has an annual Mardi Gras celebration dinner and both Homer and Concord have a fall harvest supper open to the public. Both congregations seek to provide God’s love and compassion to all those they reach through these programs.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We are hoping to have someone who is open to sharing in our enthusiasm and energy and help lend spiritual leadership to our work! We seek someone who can help us build upon the work we’ve already done for God’s Kingdom, and continue to challenge us and push us to greater heights. Specifically, we'd like to have leadership in living out our mission of living by faith, being known by love, and being a voice of hope to our community. The Homer church has started incorporating technology into the work of the church, and we’d love to have someone who could take our Facebook page and our live streaming to the next level to help us connect with as many people as possible. The Concord church is also expanding on its technology use, with an active Facebook page as well as live-streamed services. An engaging pastor will effectively connect scripture to the "real world" and help both congregations continue to grow in our spirituality and walk with God. Facebook offers both congregations a way to connect with people around the world, and we'd welcome leadership to help us better leverage this resource.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

For Homer:

  1. Lives a faith-driven life

  2. Social--we seek a pastor who is able to easily interact with all members of our community

  3. Supportive

  4. Creative

  5. Has a “rural heart”---can love small-town life, but will enjoy the opportunities provided by the three major univesities within an hour's drive!

  6. Willingness to share ideas!

  7. Can delegate/use resources

  8. Someone who respects/appreciates talents

For Concord:

  1. Authenticiy

  2. Good communication skills

  3. Compassionate

  4. Good listener

  5. Prioritizes pastoral care

  6. Good business skills
