Download: First Presbyterian Church Associate Pastor
What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.
First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach foresees a future where the congregation continues to feel recharged and renewed spiritually through inspiring worship, Christian education, fellowship, and mission. This renewal and growth will be contagious as we share the good news with our neighbors, surrounding community and the world at large. Members will be guided through our Lord Jesus Christ as we encounter good news in Scripture and are led to find ways to connect these teachings to modern life. As we have for almost 100 years, our community of believers will sustain and uplift each other with understanding and love as we navigate through the different stages of our lives. We are confident that God will provide for us as we continue to try new things in an ever-changing world and into our next 100 years of ministry. Inspired by the grace and truth of Christ to nurture one another’s faith and to do God’s work in the world, we live out our mission and vision through 10 values that describe how we reach up to God and how we reach out to our world. We reach up through worship, preaching, music, prayer, and Bible teaching. These values remind us of Jesus’ commandment, “to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” We reach out through community ministries, congregational care, financial stewardship, early childhood Christian education, and family. These values remind us of Jesus’ commandment, “love your neighbor as yourself.”
How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
In 2019, First Presbyterian Church clarified its Mission and Values statements through a thoughtful and comprehensive Mission Study. This effort included surveys from 342 respondents and 22 small group sessions. This process helped us clearly discern where God is leading our church in ministry and mission in today’s world. One of the critical needs the study highlighted, especially in small group interviews, was a need to purposefully develop and support our children and youth programs.
Through the next Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian, we long to enhance our strong Christian Education program, increasing participation across all ages, drawing in new volunteers, engaging interesting curriculum, and encouraging members to learn and grow together. Additionally, the Mission Study highlighted fellowship, friendship, and mutual care as one of our congregational strengths. Through their work with the Fellowship Committee, we seek an Associate Pastor who can develop new fellowship opportunities for members of all ages and increase involvement into existing fellowship programs, further strengthening a vital ministry of our church.
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

Student Interns - First Congregational Church of La Grange, LaGrange, IL

Location: LaGrange, IL
First Congregational Church of La Grange is seeking two student interns.
Download: Intern Position 2022
EXPECTATIONS OF AN INTERN
Previously, we offered 2 student placements of 10 hours per week for 2 academic years with each student rotating out on a different year. The two students rotate through between two “modules.” Both modules explored means by which members of the community witness to and grow in the intersection of faith and life in a post-Christian culture. In both modules, the students were part of the preaching/worship rotation with each student preaching at least a twice a semester and helping to develop, plan, and lead worship on a regular cycle. The driving question for this aspect of the internship is “Where faith and the world intersect, how do we celebrate the grace and extravagant welcome of God in the public setting?”
Module 1: The first module offers experience in the area of faith and spiritual development of youth and adults in both classroom, experiential, and intergenerational settings for post confirmation members of the community. The intern will help in the areas of Stewardship and Worship development. The driving question in this module might be, “In a very different time of being “church,” how do we nurture a Generous, Creative, and Growing Spirit in God’s people of every age ?”
Module 2: The second module would focus primarily on Pastoral Care, Spiritual Development from Birth through Confirmation, and church administration. The intern will also learn about non-profit finance, leadership development, and practicing healthy boundaries. The driving question for this module might be, “As a new “church” unfolds, how do we develop a system of faithful accountability at all levels of the church?”
In both modules, the gifts and abilities of the intern will be considered in developing the goals, objectives, and processes for the term.
We are experimenting with new ways of being the church. As such, everything that our staff and interns try is an experiment. We don’t consider any effort a failure; rather we seek to learn what will and will not work in the re-imagined church in this new age.
STIPEND
We will offer a stipend. The amount will be dependent upon the number of hours of seminary training completed and the number of hours worked on-site each week. The starting rate is $135/week.

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?
Embrace the charge of Matthew 28:19-20 and lead our church to reflect that for ourselves and our surrounding community – as a person who has a heart for bringing the unsaved to Christ.
We recognize the need to seek God’s direction in all things, so we value a pastor who will keep us focused on Scripture and prayer; however, we desire more than just a “Sunday preacher”.
We accept that our pastor will not be able to do everything. We have a dedicated team of workers who are eager to be engaged, but we need a good “coach”. Our pastor will get to know us and our community through everyday encounters, and while caring for our souls, will also care about conversation and building trusting relationships. They will help us discover our gifts, and then how to best use these gifts to give spiritual direction and physical help to others, and to create a strong future by enlisting volunteers, strengthening existing programs, initiating new programs, and appropriately delegating responsibilities to others. Through this pastor’s team-building spiritual direction and guidance, we will continue to build on our strengths, and be inspired to reach out in love to all people and to be involved in God’s work.
Our willingness to receive and explore new ideas and strategies for what God is calling us to do will be welcomed from the pastor candidate. Their ideas will be entertained because the change is needed for our ministry and the future of our church.
Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.
A led by the spirit of God believer with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who has:
a strong commitment to Christ, while projecting the joy of Christ (Galatians 5: 22-23)
a definite sense of God’s calling to be a pastor (a shepherd – 1 Peter 5:
a thorough knowledge of Scripture with an ability to teach it effectively and relevantly (Romans 10:14)
integrity and honesty (Philippians 4:8)
a life marked by prayer, faith, compassion, and love (1 Samuel 12:23)
a vision to strengthen believers and reach the lost for Christ (to become and stay “salt” and “light” – Matthew 5: 13-1
a compassion for the struggles and concerns of others (Hebrews 5:2)
the ability to communicate clearly (Colossians 4:6)
the ability to delegate as appropriate (Exodus 18: 13-24)
spiritual wisdom to discern “which time any time is to do what” - when “to change” and when not “to change” (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8)
What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?
The worship leader, delivering sermons and teachings from the Bible.
Conduct services throughout the year including the sacrament of Holy Communion, baptisms, marriages, and funerals. The pastor will also arrange for the filling of the pulpit during the times they will be absent.
The pastor will moderate Session and Congregational Meetings. They will also act as an advisor to all other committees within the Church.
They will visit with members and attenders to offer prayer and support during times of sickness and other times of concern. The pastor will also offer home communion to shut ins.
The pastor will oversee the administrative functions of the church, coordinating with committee chairs and the choir director. The pastor will also provide direct supervision to the secretary.
The pastor will represent the church at the local ministerium and Presbytery meetings.
The pastor will familiarize themselves with the youth of the church to provide not only a pastoral relationship to the individual but also when appropriate spiritual guidance for the challenges of growing up.

The First Presbyterian Church of Barre is a warm, welcoming group of people striving to follow Jesus in our actions and words. We are located in a well maintained, century old building with stained glass windows, a beamed sanctuary and a newly refurbished organ. While our membership is only about 100, we are made up of members and friends dedicated to making a difference for those in need in our community and beyond. The building is situated in a small urban area in a largely rural state, known for its liberal politics. Barre has a rich industrial history made up of many generations of immigrants from Europe and Canada. Some of our members are generational, honoring Scottish and Italian heritage. Many others in our church family have relocated to Vermont from other parts of the country. We work closely with area churches of other denominations to advocate and provide for the needs of our neighbors, especially the unhoused. We have active and involved boards of elders and deacons, plus several committees and other small groups who meet regularly. We employ a part time secretary, treasurer, custodian, tech assistant and pianist. We also enjoy the services of an Organist and a Choir Director, both of whom serve in a voluntary capacity. While the pandemic has impacted everyone around the world, our congregation is vibrant and has thrived despite these challenges, providing for a balanced budget to fund our missions.
We respectfully acknowledge that our church sits on unceded ancestral land of the Abenaki people. We strive to be a welcoming and affirming community, open to all people as divine creations. Our church is committed to being a Matthew 25 congregation, focusing on building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism and eradicating systemic poverty.
